A Gennita Low Excerpt: Alex and T Meet (Redux)

As promised yesterday, and because of many, many reader requests, I'm re-posting the excerpt in which T and Alex, two popular characters in the GLow World, met for the first time. The proposal to this book is still being shopped around, so no, you won't be reading the story soon and yes, I do have the first version of the manuscript done.

*************

THE FOLLOWING IS THE FIRST CHAPTER OF ALEX AND T's STORY, Copyright 2009@Gennita Low, all rights reserved. No part of the following excerpt can be reproduced without the author's permission.

VIRTUALLY YOURS (you guys know this title is tongue-in-cheek, right)

CHAPTER ONE

She knew she had to think fast when they brought him into the room, prodding him roughly with their weapons. She recognized him immediately, even under all that dirty snow and unkempt hair. She had thought him very attractive from the computer files but up close, he was magnificent.

They had pulled off his fur coat and cut away his sweater, and he shivered slightly in the cold room, although his expression remained watchful and calm. The thermal shirt he wore clung to his broad chest, outlining the body she had imagined touching when she’d studied his file. It took her a moment to realize that he was looking directly at her. She took a deep breath and calmly returned his gaze. He didn’t know her, after all.

He hadn’t changed much from the file photos, although they were a few years old. His blond hair was longer and blonder than she’d thought, as if he had been staying out in the sun a lot. His blue eyes still captured hers, and she felt a tingle of awareness as he studied her. A hint of a smile ghosted his full, sensual lips, as if he knew exactly how he affected her. Impossible, she thought. She was not that easy to read.

“Talia, love, he’s eyeing you,” the man beside her said mockingly. “Do you know him?”

She couldn’t take her eyes away from the prisoner. There were so many questions she wanted to ask, like what the hell was he doing here? “No, I don’t think so,” she lied, pretending to study the man closely. “You said he’s American, Sasha?”

“That’s what his ID says,” Sasha answered. He flipped open the wallet in his hand. “Robert Alexander Diamond,” he read aloud in thick, accented English. “D. O. B.?”

“Date of birth,” she told him, also in English, with a softer, gentler accent. She didn’t need him to tell her that the prisoner was thirty-seven years old.

“Ah, da. Date of birth.” Sasha paused again, frowning. He was a good-looking man, with a deep scar marring one side of his face, from the corner of one eye down to almost his throat. The puckered skin added menace to a face too pretty to have been in such a vicious knife fight. His lips pursed as he tried to read the information.

She immediately guessed the problem. “Americans, Sasha,” she gently explained, “reverse the month and the date.”

“Bah,” Sasha succinctly gave his opinion about American ways.

She laughed, as was expected of her, then stepped closer to the Russian man. “Let me see this ID, darling.” Nice fake, she noted, and again wondered what he was doing here, in Siberia. He would be another problem tonight, to add to her current one. She couldn’t decide which was the more difficult task—avoiding the amorous advances of Sasha Barinsky without raising his suspicions or saving the ass of Alexander Diamond, COS Commando currently on the lam.

“Well, anything to tell us whether he is really as he said, a lost photographer?” Sasha growled. “Here, look at these papers on him. His formal Russian is quite good, for a dumb American journalist.”

“Ah, da.” She gave the silent prisoner a hard glance. Why did he use that job description? He was just asking for trouble. “Now he does remind me of someone, Sasha. There is an American photo-journalist named Robert Diamond. That middle name threw me off.”

“What do you think he’s doing here in Siberia?”

“There’s a Robert Diamond who writes adventure articles. He’s famous, in a way. Likes to do what they call ‘extreme wilderness photography.’ You know, camp in dangerous places, take photos. Very American.”

Sasha Barinsky took a step toward the American standing there quietly between his two guards. The prisoner was too calm for his liking. “You are in a dangerous place now, Robert Diamond,” he addressed him, in his halting English, “Why are you here?”

*

These weren’t Russian militia, like he’d first assumed. Alex looked at the man and woman as they discussed him. The man was obviously the leader, standing stiffly in his shiny boots and wearing expensive jewelry and a Rolex watch. But it was the woman who drew his attention; ever since they’d shoved him into this barely furnished room, with its dim lights and dank air, he had felt drawn to her. It was a strange feeling; he had not been drawn to anything for a long time.

Exotic and glamorous, she didn’t fit these surroundings. She was tall, maybe three or four inches under his own six feet two—it was hard to tell with her in heels—and dressed elegantly in cashmere and fur. She wore fur-lined boots that emphasized the shapely length of her endless legs, and like her companion, her fingers were decked with rings. Her black hair gleamed against the white fur of her scarf and her eyes were equally dark as she studied him. She had the exquisite bone structure of an Astrakhan princess, with high cheekbones and a perfect oval face. She could have been a model in a fashion magazine. He’d have liked to photograph her. He frowned. There was something familiar about her face, but he couldn’t discern what it was.

He understood their fast Russian dialect but didn’t show his comprehension, waiting till they spoke to him in English. When they had first stopped him at the road, he had used stilted formal Russian, like a traveler who knew enough to get by. He was lucky he did. Something told him that these men didn’t want him to understand too much. His life was in danger, what with the twenty-odd guards he had counted outside, plus these two beside him. Wherever he was, it was a heavily armed place.

“Why are you here?” the man called Sasha asked him.

“I tried to explain to your men,” Alex replied in a slow drawl. “I have permission, as you can see from my papers, to cross-country ski to get photographs for my next magazine article about this beautiful remote area in Siberia. I must have made a wrong turn because this sure isn’t Slabinja, is it?”

“Slabinja is south of here. You’re fifteen kilometers off,” the woman—Talia, wasn’t it?—told him. He liked her voice, low and lilting, the accent making her English softly attractive.

“Then, if you’ll kindly release me and give me back my equipment, I’ll be on my way,” Alex said. And he would be. He had no interest in finding out what these people were up to. He had an inkling, but he didn’t want to know. Those days were over.

Sasha laughed, a short unpleasant sound. “Robert, it is unfortunate for you but you will have to stay. I cannot trust you not to report to the authorities. I don’t even know that you are not a spy.”

“A spy, darling?” Talia questioned lightly, a mocking smile forming. “You’ve been watching American movies again.”

Her grasp of the English language was very good, Alex noted, as he listened to them.

Sasha nodded. “That’s the only good thing out of that place.” He turned to the guards and reverted back to the native dialect. “Search him for hidden weapons, then lock him up. I will make him talk later.” Then, in that heavy English, he said to Alex, “You will be detained, Robert Diamond, till my business is done, then I’ll free you tomorrow.”

Alex didn’t let them know that he had understood every threatening words Sasha had said to his guards. He only slanted a long look at Talia, whose dark eyes seemed to hold a thousand secrets. He wondered whether she was as cold-hearted as she appeared, accepting the death of an unfortunate stranger without any emotion.

“Let me search him,” she suddenly said, still in that Russian dialect, and the smile she gave him was maddeningly mocking. “It’s his last few hours. He should have a woman’s touch.”

“Ah, Talia, always after...”

“Tsk, Sasha, don’t insult me, please. After all, I got you your firepower very cheaply, no?”

Alex blinked, but didn’t move a muscle. Firepower. That could mean only one thing in this part of the world. These people were dealing with illegal weapons, and right now, the hottest illegal Russian firepower was dismantled nuclear-capable weaponry. Damn. He was knee-deep in trouble. They didn’t intend to have any witnesses. And he wondered whether this Talia knew that he would understand their dialect, if she was deliberately giving him a warning.

Sasha curled an arm across Talia’s shoulders, drawing her close to him. His hand caressed her dark tresses possessively. “Later, my sweet,” he promised her, the leer in his voice obvious, “I shall pay you well.”

Talia made a moue. “Later. Now, I want to search this American.”

Sasha sighed indulgently. “All right, but I’m not going to stay here and watch. I’ll be in my quarters waiting after my meeting with my men. You will come up soon?”

“Of course, darling.”

Sasha nodded at his men. “The cell,” he reminded them, “after Talia Fyodorevna is through with the American.”

“Da,” the two guards said in unison, their faces impassive. Sasha Barinsky left the room.

*

Alex watched as Talia slowly circled him once. Twice. Her boots clicked on the bare cement floor. He was getting colder by the minute, and knew that the woman had stopped the search by the guards as a favor to him. They would have stripped him and he would probably freeze to death in the hellhole they were planning to throw him. Not that he wouldn’t be dead at the hands of the unpleasant Sasha when he deigned to extricate himself from the delectable Talia’s charms. Again, he wondered what this exotic creature was up to, subtly coming to his rescue twice already.

She was an impressive-looking woman, exuding elegance and enough confidence that told him that she wasn’t what she appeared to be. Her eyes were unrevealingly dark, only the small smile on her shapely lips betrayed her amusement. Her steps around him had insolent pauses, as if she were admiring something about him. She liked to play games, this one.

She finally stopped in front of him again, standing so close her perfume tantalized the air. Her head tilted to one side slightly, as if she was considering how to amuse herself.

“You’ll have to bear my hands on you, darling,” she drawled in that marvelous accent again, and fluttered elegant fingers suggestively a few inches from his chest, “or these guards will report that I didn’t touch you.”

“Rather you, dushka, than their paws,” Alex assured her mildly, still unsure of her motives.

Talia smiled at the endearment, then came forward and ran her hands over the taut, masculine body, pretending to search for hidden weapons. She knew where he would hide them, if he had any. She knew what his specialty was, exactly how he could escape, given the right chance, but she didn’t think he would be able to tonight without her intervention.

Her eyes held Alex’s as her hands moved over him with deliberate insolence. Wide shoulders. Impressive pectorals. He had kept his physical prowess while he’d been gone. That told her a lot. And she went lower still, touching his chest and stomach, then smoothed her hands around his waist to explore his lower back. Her hands moved back to the front, lightly resting above his snow-dampened pants.

“Part your legs, darling,” she murmured, keeping her voice amused. “You know the procedure.”

Alex obliged, standing with his feet apart. Her hands were impersonal, but not exactly leaving him unaffected. She explored him more like someone memorizing his body than a person doing a body search, but she concealed it well. Only he could feel the curious tenderness of her hands as she glided them intimately over his chest, under his arms, down his stomach.

There was something very erotic in the way she went down on her knees in front of him as she continued her sensual search. He refused to let go of her mocking gaze, looking down into the dark depths of those beautiful eyes—searching for that familiar thing that had caught him by surprise—even as her wicked hands traveled up his thighs, her thumbs teasing the inseam of his underpants with delicate pressure, bringing his senses to a keening awareness that had nothing to do with the frigid air. He may only be wearing his thermal clothes, but Alex was suddenly no longer cold. He concentrated on not revealing the effect of her hands on him.

Talia dared not linger, but made sure that the guards saw her thorough search before she left a micro device on his inner thigh. Now she would know exactly where they put him.

“There, painless.” She straightened, still smiling. “And my compliments on such a beautiful body.”

She had been tempted to explore a little more, but some fantasies were best left unfulfilled. And her fantasies of Number One had always been...interesting.

“I’ll return the favor sometime.”

Amused, she tilted her head to acknowledge the unspoken challenge. Even in danger, a COS Commando was cocky as ever. Training was deeply ingrained in all of them, even the reluctant ones. “If you’re freed tomorrow,” she said softly, leaving the rest of the sentence unfinished.

“I’ll certainly work on it,” Alex promised.

“You’re going to need friends,” Talia came back. There, she had given him enough hints. “As they say in the States, darling. Later, alligator.” She stepped back and nodded to the two guards. They started to lead Alex out of the room, shoving him towards the door. He gave her a backward glance. She winked at him, looking absurdly majestic in that danky, badly lit room.

*

There was a time in his life when he would have been prepared for moments like this, but that was almost two years ago. Twenty two months nineteen days, to be exact. And certainly not in this lifetime.

Alex stared at the ceiling above him, ignoring the growing numbness around his wrists. He was tied spread eagle on some sort of wooden bed and the cold was slowly robbing him of his strength. Soon he would be too weak to even attempt an escape.

Not that he would be successful. He was unprepared for this and his skills were rusty from lack of practice. So if he died, it would be his own fault.

But he didn’t mind dying. He had felt dead inside for a long time now, since....He tried to let his own past sorrow drown out his will to live, but it wasn’t easy when he had been a man driven to enjoy life at the edge. Old habits died hard, and his own mental strength, the very core of him that was indomitable, refused to obey his own demands to let go. To give up.

Robert Alexander Diamond, damn his soul, was still COS Command’s Number One of the VIRUS Unit, no matter how far he ran away from reality. The man with the many accents, who could move like a shadow in and out of any predicament. The one who divert attention from the others—that was his specialty. No matter what, he was still one of the members of the elite team from which he had walked away.

So he lay there, torn between letting fate take its course or to take charge of his own destiny, as he had always done before he had disappeared, before fate took Emma from him.

He exhaled slowly, cursing that he was willing his body to fight the cold.

It was difficult to give up. He could at least have the decency to stop wanting to try, but his punishment was to face the guilt of wanting to live. Even when he really felt dead inside, his will wanted to live. Damn his will. Damn his love of life.

A sound from the only window in his cell broke through his reverie. The cracked and dirty opening was high on the wall across the bed and leaked in the cold, wintry blast like a sieve. Right now, someone was doing something against it, a gentle humming sound that merged with the Siberian wind outside. Imperceptible except to his trained ears, because he’d heard that particular hum before.

His sight had always been excellent in the dark, and he could see the distinctive shape of a hand against one of the square panes. He counted the seconds, knowing exactly how long it would take before a slight push of that hand would loosen the glass. He had done the same thing many times before, in another lifetime. Whoever it was must be freezing because the hand was ungloved. He continued watching calmly, intrigued at the sight of the lone pale hand that slipped in and expertly unlatched the window. It opened without protest, and the room became decidedly chillier by the second. He supposed his captors didn’t care if he would attempt to escape through that opening, considering that he was unlikely to survive long outside in his thermal underclothes.

A duffle bag dropped on the floor with a soft thud. A lean, lithe figure followed, dropping down on all fours like a cat. Turning around with the grace of a dancer, the newcomer closed the window and stuffed something into the hole that had been created a few minutes ago.

The invader was noiseless, efficient, picking up the duffle bag on the floor before advancing towards the bed. The rich midnight hair had disappeared into the inky color of the furry hood, and the pearly paleness of the face emphasized those glittering black eyes.

So what if he was spread-eagled? He had always been polite to visitors. Alex gave the approaching figure a small smile, willing his teeth to stop chattering.

“Welcome to my parlor, dushka,” he murmured.

Numbers & Intentions

It never fails to amuse me. All I have to do is post sexy vege pictures and a Gerard Butler video and my site numbers spike up by hundreds. Many people from all over the world (Indonesia, I'm looking at you) are in love with Gerard Butler. I'm not sure what people have in mind when they google for sexy veges, LOL.

I know writers don't share sales numbers because of...I don't know...because of some unspoken professional rule, but since Big Bad Wolf was a self-pubbed experiment, I'll do so on my blog for those who are interested in whether this option is viable for you.

At the end of 2009, one year after BIG BAD WOLF came out, I've sold 700 copies, mostly through Amazon. Those that I sold from Createspace are mainly orders from overseas, especially from wonderful Australian booksellers who keep my Aussie readers Glow-happy and to whom I'm eternally grateful.

Overseas sales are about 100 copies, ordered by readers from Australia, Malaysia (yo, homies!), Singapore, Thailand, England, and France. I'm sure I missed a few international readers, especially Canadians, who ordered through Amazon, which I must seriously thank because I know the shipping charges got to be painful to the wallet.

When I started this project, my research said I could expect about 250 sales at most because, other than family and friends, self-published books aren't going to catch much attention. So that was my target. I figure I could possibly get 250 sales at 12 or 13 books a month.

My main worry was the price. Amazon takes a big chunk of the $11.55 price I put on the book, almost 80 percent. I needed to make back some money to:

1) prove that it's a business venture that can bring in profit
2) pay a bit of taxes (I didn't have a contract with Samhain when I started so I needed to show income for my GLow entity)
3) pay for the odds and ends, like the cover art and shipping charges

Most trade paperbacks are $14 and above. Most self-published books are set at incredibly self-delusional prices (some at US$40). I really tried to get it as close to $10 as I could, but couldn't do it at that time. I think, at this point, after a year, I can lower the price to $10.55.

My only problem was that I didn't know how to set my .pdf file into Amazon's .css requirement. Someone mentioned that Word would automatically do this but maybe it's a newer Word since my version (2003) doesn't seem to have this function. I just didn't have the time to sit down to learn. I'd love to be able to get on Kindle and sell it for $4 or whatever it was the wise and funny J.A. Konrath was teaching at his blog. Maybe that would be my 2010 goal...learn Kindle-ese.

Okay, that's my self-pub numbers in a few paragraphs. I'm not an expert. I mostly muddled through the process and did very little publicity except blog about it. The numbers stand on their own, with no big stores selling the book, no big push from anyone, a couple of wonderful reviews from Mrs. Giggles and Riley Merrick (sadly, I'm heartbroken, I couldn't get Harriet Klausner to give me five stars, heh), and no advertisement. All I had were my readers and I'm eternally grateful to everyone who ordered the book because you trusted my writing enough to know that I'd try my best to give you a worthy book. Thank you.

I think I'd try another self-pub book this year, so that I can LOWER Big Bad Wolf's price. Just to see whether Amazon would do a 2-for-1 sale or something like that. I'm curious at how they recommend their Createspace books. Besides, the income from those 700 books was enough to pay for most of my health insurance. So, yay. That was much, much more than my original 2 bks a month expectations, yes?

***********

Last year I also went epubbed for the first time. My New Year's resolution was to sell Virtually Hers by-hook-or-by-crook and I accomplished that in May, when the wonderful Angela James, then Samhain editor, bought my book.

Virtually Hers has been out three months and has done okay. Again, with a two-year lapse between Book 1 and Book 2, I wasn't expecting much, so was pleasantly surprised at the first month's sales number (in the hundreds). I'm looking forward to the print version of Virtually Hers coming out this August because I know many of my readers are waiting for the print format to read Jed's and Hell's continuing story.

Many readers are still not familiar with the e-book world. Or they don't hear much news about it. I get a number of emails a month asking where they could find Virtually Hers, after they googled the item and found that it was out in 2007. That's OLD news, of course, and I have to explain that THAT book never came out, and that it is now available through Samhain. Two out of three would then re-email me, confused about how to order the print book from Samhain, even though I've earlier explained that VHers was an electronic book first.

So, as an e-author, I've to learn how to communicate clearer about book formats and how the e-book world works (first e-format, then months later, print format). Most of my readers are looking for the print format and although some are willing to download the e-book, many opted to wait. I adore their patience. I adore their wonderful steadfastness. I adore that they keep looking for Gennita Low's books.

Many of my emails often ask about Alex's and T's story. I cannot tell you how popular these two are to readers and how many times I've to explain to them that although my agent is shopping their story around (with my proposal), she hasn't been able to sell it. And you know I love Alex and T as much as you do. I wrote their story in series-contemporary format years ago and even then they were special. I posted their original meeting a while back as a Christmas gift and I still get readers asking for a repeat after I've taken it off. I'll probably have to do it again.

So, anyway, I guess I should be bold and announce that my 2010 resolution is to get Alex's and T's story published by-hook-and-by-crook, eh? But I do have two projects that I need to get to:

1) For my agent, a new proposal about treasure hunters, with a spec. ops. flavor

2) For the self-pub, the Viking Dude urban-fantasy/alternative first POV story. It's not doing too well as a proposal, so I'm going to get it done (because I love my story) and put the first five chapters out for you to read free to see whether you'd like to continue. If there are enough thumbs-up, I'll self-publish it on Amazon.

Enough about boring numbers and intentions. Thought I'd share with you my 2010 writing plans after Virtually One (Samhain, hopefully late Spring 2010). I should be doing my first e-book signing at Romantic Times Booklovers Convention! Another first, and not sure what that entails. And yes, I'll be giving away free copies of Big Bad Wolf ;-).

For those who have requested, I'll put up the first chapter of T's and Alex's story again this afternoontomorrow (sorry, had to take off to measure a roof. In the cold, argh! And after that, I was so frozen, I was tempted into putting liqueur in my hot chocolate....) some time and put the link here. Stay tune.

Now, if only I could put a Gerard Butler original video in my ebook, you know I'm going to get some fantastic sales numbers :-).

My Gerard Butler To Start The Year

It looks like a good "light" romantic suspense romp ;-).

I hope it does better than the last romantic comedy he did, the one with the Grey's Anatomy actress.

Which Camp Do You Belong To?

It's the topic of contention at water coolers. Even the old folks at Shit and Grits are having philosophical snarling over it.

So, tell me, which camp do you belong to?

Do you belong to the side that is celebrating a new decade starting with 2010?

Or, are you the firm believer that 2010 is the END of the decade and that the first day of the next decade doesn't come till 2011?

Now, try arguing this with friends and loved ones after a few glasses of your favorite alcoholic beverage. Hilarity ensues when you see everyone holding up their fingers and counting, "One...twooooo...two to threeeeeee.......ten!"

and

"zero to one, and...."

and

"There's no zero year!"

and

"Oh yeah, well, then the double zeroes don't exist then, you *&%$head!"

and

"Eleven...twelve...must I count to 2010?"

:D

Renewal Coming Up?

I took a few days off the blog to recharge. I have had a pretty stressful two weeks before Christmas, what with three jobs to finish up before the big day. Besides, I figure y'all are happily snuggled with your loved ones, eating cookies and drinking eggnog anyway ;).

It's the last week of 2009. Does the last week of any given year make you reminiscent and contemplative? This one, in particular, because it is the last of year of the decade and we start a whole new one soon.

Remember 1999 and it was headlined by Party Like It's 1999 and everyone was buzzing about Y2K and some people were stocking cans of tuna and water in anticipation of massive power outage, at the very least? Then, before, 1989 was dominated by Massive Crowd Disasters/Gatherings, starting with the Hillsborough Stadium stampede during a football game, followed by the Tian Ah Men protests, and, finally, topped at the end of the year with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

So I was enjoying my wine and trying to think about the big events that would give 2009 its flavor. All I could think about was the horrible economy and because of it, how slow everything seemed to have gotten. For most of us, personal and business lives suffered from stagnation. So, rather depressing.

Took another sip of wine. Change the direction of my thoughts. Let's move onwards, then. What was the beginning of a decade like?

I do measure my own life in decades. Why? Because I'm old enough, that's why, ha. I can actually get to see some kind of pattern in the way my own life progresses.

For example, 1970 marked the beginning of going to school and learning the wondrous new world of communicating in other languages. I excelled in it. And I found a secret world, one in which I was very comfortable and in which I found my own comfort--books.

1980 was the beginning of my adventure as an adult. I was by myself, in a brand new world, and had the whole future ahead of me.

1990 marked the start of my roofing business. Another different planet to explore.

2000 was the year I made the decision to go after the goal of being published. Big Bad Wolf's finaling in the RWA in 1999 had given me confidence and hope that I might be good enough. 2000 was the year I decided I should try writing Big Books, called single titles, so that I could submit to more publishers. 2000 was the year my agent took me on.

Interesting pattern, eh? Following this trend, I wonder what 2010 would start for me? Maybe a different path? Hopefully, a successful one!

Can you trace your own footprints? It doesn't have to be in decades because I know some of you aren't as ancient as moi :-P. How was your year and are you looking forward to 2010? Perhaps you can share a few of your hopes and dreams with me here.

P/S For those wanting a SEXY VEGE entry, I'm looking for some good material to end decade with! :D

Meljean Brook Does Book PRoN!

Meljean Brook, who has built a fascinating urban fantasy world in her novels, finally came clean and admitted some very dirty things. She even took pictures to prove that she WENT THERE.

NAUGHTY NAUGHTY MELJEAN

It sure makes me jealous my books can't do some of the things her books can, dammit. That clip looks painful. Ouch ouchOUCH!

:D

You should print these pictures for those times when someone hounds you about your reading prOn. Seriously, it would shut them down. And up. Or maybe push them a step or two off their high and mighty ladder.

P/S Should I end the year with some Sexy Vege Pics?

What Christmas Shopping?

So sorry I've been so quiet this past fortnight, but I've had to finish three houses before Christmas with very little help. I'm going nuts trying running around in between Christmassy stuff!

I hope you are all doing well at your little corner, busy preparing for the holidays ahead and spending time with visiting family. For me, it's always nice to think about family gatherings and shared laughter at this time of the year.

Are you done with your Christmas list yet? And what do you really, really, really, really want for Christmas? Come on, you can tell Auntie Glow.

For myself, I'd like a whole week at the spa. Just me and those people who'd take care of me, me, and only me. Skin, massage, the works. No running home to feed furbabies either. A whole week at the spa with time to write Jed and Hell's story because I'm so, so, so behind. Don't want anyone to bother me either, except maybe my dogsitter. (Sigh. I don't see this dream-present becoming real)

Your turn to 'fess up.

Marjorie Liu Has New Romance Game!

This woman never ceases to amaze me with her ability to cross genres and create new paths for romance.

She has partnered with Passion Fruit Games to give you a romance video game called Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box, which is based on her wonderful debut novel of the same title. It sounds so neat and just in time for Christmas pre-orders too!

Tell your man you want this instead of the pap smear suggestions from CBS!

Congrats, Marjorie! This looks awesome.

A Quick Reflection on 2009

It wasn't great but it also wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Writing-wise, I did manage to have three books out, although one is a self-pub. The self-pub, btw, has made more money than the ebook to Samhain so far, but that's probably because it's been out almost a year whereas Virtually Hers has just been out 2 months. Still, I'm very pleased with the self-publishing experiment. It does prove that, with some knowledge and a good story, an author with readers can sell her books beyond her usual 100 copies spread out among friends and family. Now, if I can write one book a month....that would be enough to pay the mortgage ;-)...maybe.

It's definitely an improvement from last year's frozen status. Talking about frozen, yeah, roofing has picked up some too, so I'm actually making an income instead of living off my savings, whew. I'm very, very relieved about that.

Like I said, the year hasn't given me everything I'd hoped for, but I had many blessings:

1) Virtually Hers finally out, Virtually One contracted and on the way
2) My health (yes, the roof incident!)
3) Print version of my books.
4) Good friends who are supportive and generous
5) More roofing jobs
6) My Two Grand Old Furbabies' health--this is actually my most fervent wish, as everyday with them happy, healthy and eating (and no emergency vet bills!) is a gift to me.

What are your reflections on your year?

Alan Elsner's List Of Top "Romance" Books

I was writing this spoof on author Alan Elsner's dismissive article about how romance books today killed romance (but not his romance book) on HuffPo to the kewl tune of Milkshake....then I changed my mind about putting it out in public because, you know, it's Christmas time and...and...my readers won't care about being indirectly called stupid by Alan Elsner, great love story writer.

So, anyway, I thought I'd just show the link to bad sex passages (Literary Review entries) of non-romance writers who are probably great love story writers like Alan Elsner instead. I'm sure you'll agree these are gems. Like:

She puts her hands flat against his chest and leans into him in a simulacrum of a swoon, making a mewling sound. Her hips are goosefleshed and he can feel all the tiny hairs erect on her forearms. When he kisses her hot, soft mouth, which is bruised a little at one corner, he knows at once that she has been with another man, and recently - faint as it is there is no mistaking that tang of fish-slime and sawdust - for he has no doubt that this is the mouth of a busy working girl. (The Infinites by John Banvilled)

or, for the win:

Then, Bobby starts scrabbling frantically across the carpet for Mr Condom, sending five or six multicolour Durexes flying through the air, and he struggles getting the packet open and Georgie has to roll Mr Condom down Mr Penis for him and she has to help insert him into Mrs Vagina (Ten Storey Love Song by Richard Milward)

Oh yes, these entries certainly beat my little rap song about Alan Elsner's milkshake getting all the boys. Hee.

Get thee there and tell me how you love these great sex scenes!

Brainstorm With Me

So I'm set to reread the beginning and parts of Sleeping With The Agent. The Jed bits. Because, if you've read Virtually Hers, SWTA is part of the timeframe and you'll notice that Jed was delegating in those beginning chapters.

I'd like to read your thoughts on several things bouncing around in my head.

1) Jed's state of mind at the beginning when he came in for the meeting.

2) Jed's dependence on Nikki. Can you imagine a scene/convo between those two? ;-)

3) Let's hear your theories on sleeper tie-ins and end of Virtually Hers.

Come on, put your smart caps on and help me create a tight GLow world ;-).

Year End List of Recommended Books Pt. 1

I can't believe it's December already. Are you guys ready for the rush towards 2010?

I always like to look back at the past year around this time--what I've read, what I've done, significant events. When I used to keep a journal, I'd have these long-ass entries about the year, with side- and footnotes as I reread them in the following years. Sometimes I wish I kept up with the hobby, but what with writing for a living, doing blogs, tweeting and facebooking, I think the private journal has sort of gone out of style.

I mean, are we private about anything any more? :-P I know why writers do it--we like to share our thoughts in writing because you know, that's our thing, and we love the acknowledgement of our output. In fact, I'd say most writers need it because writing in public help us gather our ideas and give our Muse something to work with; we observe, opine, and when a light bulb comes on, we tell stories.

Which segues us to new stories I've read this year that are in my Top List ;-). I'm going to start with just five, and during the rest of the month, have a few more posts of fives titles. Here they are, in no particular order.

1) Magic Strikes--Ilona Andrews

Urban fantasy. Book 3 of the Kate Daniels series. This series is getting better and better and thank God Ilona hasn't sacrificed the romance/relationship. Sometimes I get frustrated with reading urban fantasy because I want more relationship and not gory supernatural murders, you know?

2) Pleasure and Purpose--Megan Hart

Fantasy erotic romance that reads like a historical. The worldbuilding is really cool and the three novellas in this anthology were riveting. Each sexual situation was different and because of the worldbuilding, the erotic elements worked very well with the romance (it's tough in erotic romance, imho, especially short stories).

3) Scandal--Carolyn Jewel

Historical. Her stories are always character-driven, very internal, and thus, very engaging for me. Sexy too, because the author takes her time.

4) Bone Crossed--Patricia Briggs

Another urban fantasy series that I follow. Mercedes the mechanic makes Gennita the roofer smile. And she is snarky without being overbearingly so. I like the werewolf politics in Briggs' world and every character is interesting. And Mercedes is kickass too, taking care of certain gory business and not needing much help, in spite of being surrounded by the alphaest of werewolves, and her being a small little coyote shifter who's just trying to stay out of trouble just adds to the fun.

5) Seducing Mr. Darcy--Gwyn Cready

Delightful historical/modern time travel! You guessed it--the heroine goes back to Mr. Darcy's time and yeah, there are some hottie-tottie moments with him that changed the text of the modern-day version. It's damn original and so much fun to read.

What about you? What have you read in 2009 that you'd like to recommend to other GLow readers?

Bet You've Never Read About This Were/Shifter!

I was googling and researching for a "cute" sidekick for my (urban fantasy pseudo-satire) Viking Dude heroine (demon slayer). Cute with a little bit of magic, I thought. Hmm. Shifter abilities? Okay, of course. Maybe give him an Asian background? Why not? Something embarassing about him to be revealed later? Oh yeah, that sounds like fun.

Muse was having a bit of fun with me.

Then I found the entry on the Japanese TANUKI, a rodent-dog shapeshifter with humongous balls. Cute and sidekickish, yes! So I googled some more, looking at pictures and already playing with plotlines and jokes.

Then I saw this Japanese commercial below, a KIDDIE commercial. Wait for the ending. Wow. I don't remember this in my version of Red Riding Hood ;-). You'd think the big bad wolf might have changed his menu after seeing that!

All she said was "Wow." Wow?!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's Thanksgiving here tomorrow and many of my American readers will be with family and close friends, having dinner and great conversation. I want to wish every one of you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Some of us have the tradition to list things we're thankful about this year. I like doing this--it gives perspective on what is important and what I've been blessed with. This year, I'm thankful

1) for holding on to my writing dream and not giving up, especially on the Virtual/Super Soldier Spy series Books 2 and 3.

2) to the angel/higher power who "caught" me while I was falling off the roof. I don't know of any other way to explain how I ended up on a concrete deck with such minor injuries after that whack on the head.

3) for the extra time with my two older furbabies. Again, I thank the higher power that somehow made me change my mind about staying overnight at Charleston that night in Aug. and instead convinced me to drive straight home. Because of that decision, I was in time to save Miracle, who, once again, lived up to her namesake. I've been very, very vigilantly taking care of them since both their hearts and kidneys aren't 100 percent.

4) for great readers like you who have been so supportive and generous all this time. Thank you for buying my books and playing a big part in keeping my dream alive.

What are you thankful for this year?

Harlequin Horizon All Links All Weeklong!

For most readers, nothing's happening, so don't worry, carry on with the Thanksgiving menus and preparation.

For most romance writers, a big deal happened since mid-last week, when Harlequin Enterprises, the world's biggest publisher, announced that they were going to monitize their slush piles by sending the rejected writers to their new publishing line, Harlequin Horizons. Much explosions ensued.

If you want to catch up with the saga and have the time, here are the links to fill your writerly hours:

1) HQ happily announces HH, the new line. (Look! Shiny! For a price, you too can be a Harlequin author!)

2) Wherein PW, New Yorker, the Examiner, and even NYT weighed in.

-->In Which The Examiner Pronounced Harlequin "Regressing" Into Vanity Pub

--> New York Times Mocks Romance Writers

--> The New Yorker Makes Fun of Romance Writers as Harlequin Hacks and Writing Romance as "Masturbatory"

As you can see, this is NOT a good thing for a romance writer and a romance writing organization to read about to start their day. It's already a given that people make fun of romance writers and romance as a genre. But when your own #1 publisher is the cause of this new mockery? Very painful and disappointing.

Let me explain that writing organizations are non-profit and function to educate and protect writers who want to make a career out of writing. These organizations do it through by-laws and local chapters, teaching those who are interested the different ways they can market their manuscripts.

The first thing we learn as writers is that money FLOWS to the author, not the other way. That means, you don't pay anyone--not an agent, not a "publisher"--to publish your work; they pay you.

Any agent who rejects your manuscript and then charges money for a publishing service (meaning, you pay $$$ to get edited or $$$ to be published) is kicked out from the Agent's Association.

Any publisher that charges you to publish your work, with false promises of distribution (when there is none), keeps the copyright, splits your royalties and/or make you buy your own books for distribution is a vanity publisher. How does one distinguish a vanity publisher from a self-publishing/Print-on-demand (POD) service? Simple. A self-publishing service allows you to copyright your own work. A self-publishing service is basically a PRINTING service--you upload your own work; you design your own product; you control the quality of the book; you keep the copyright. The service charges you for each printed book and take this expense out of the price you set. There are no thousands of dollars involved.

*NOTE. There is nothing wrong with self-publishing. I've done it with Big Bad Wolf. At the same time, I know that this is not recognized by my organization because of its by-laws, the Romance Writers of America, so I don't promote the book there.

I understand the reasoning behind this rule. If RWA allowed one self-pub into its organization, then every self-pub and vanity-pub will be eligible. There won't be any gatekeeper against the scammers who charge an arm and a leg. A writing organization must have rules to keep publishing a professional process. Can you imagine your Uncle Tom wanting to sign his un-edited and un-vetted romance at RWA because he "published" it and bought 200 copies that are now sitting in his garage?

(ETA. This is not to say there aren't great self-published authors out there. So don't come here and start that old lecture about self-publishing is a matter of choice, etc., 'kay? I respect self-published authors who have done their homework and who understand the difference between vanity publishing and doing-it-oneself; they work very hard on making their books a professional product. I'm talking about those business fronts that slap a name and title on any unedited manuscript and charge the author big sums of money after making false promises that it'll be marketed like a traditionally pubbed book)

Thus RWA, MWA (Mystery Writers of America), and SFWA (Science Fiction Writers of America) acted swiftly. RWA and SFWA took Harlequin off their eligible publishers list, a move that was akin to the shot heard around the world. Because, you know, Harlequin aka Romance Publisher King. Harlequin also publishes many suspense and mystery lines. Here are the RWA, MWA and SFWA's strongly worded announcements:

Harlequin No Longer Eligible

Author and industry blogs exploded. Many examined the Harlequin Horizon (now being called by some, Har Ho or HQHo--oh Harlequin, how could you not have foreseen the snarkage of this name?) and broke down all the monetary details of this new vanity service. Even well-known agents weighed in.

-->The best line-by-line of Har Ho's charges of their services by by Falconesse, who calculated, using Har Ho's numbers, that it would cost a writer $7930 for them to edit his/her 90,000 word manuscript. That's not counting the promotional and distribution charges, folks. And oh, the $20,000 extra if you want a minute/two length Hollywood trailer (starring who, I say? Nekkid George Clooney?)

-->Excellent breakdown of why Har Ho is misleading by author Jackie Kessler

-->A humorous conversation between Har Ho and potential client by author Jackie Kessler

-->Agent Ashley Grayson compares Har Ho to Bernie Madoff and his Ponzi scheme. He didn't mince words.

All of this led to Harlequin making another public announcement to RWA, stating that

It is disappointing that the RWA has not recognized that publishing models have and will continue to change. As a leading publisher of women’s fiction in a rapidly changing environment, Harlequin’s intention is to provide authors access to all publishing opportunities, traditional or otherwise.

which led to a great John Scalzi translation, calling Harlequin's defense as "putting lipstick on a con job."

There are people defending Harlequin's new venture, of course. Two notable ones are

1) HQ Editor Stacy Boyd who can't discuss about her employer, Harlequin, but will tell you that self-publishing is the newest, most interesting thing. I have to note here that her inability to talk about HQ really makes the title of her post, OMG RWA!, moot, since what's the point of berating a writing organization berating your own employer that you can't offend/defend/discuss about to your blog commenters?

But you must scroll down and read the many popular authors who came to publicly make their concerns known.

2) Kat Meyer at Net Galley who wonders what these writing organizations are "so afraid of?" She points out that writers should be given the chance to try a new publishing model since everyone agrees that the old one is broken.

This model is apparently opposite of Yog's Law, which is, "money flows from publisher to the author," because the moment someone pointed that out, publisher Michael Hyatt (from Thomas Nelson, publisher of Christian books, which also has a similar vanity-press deal with Author Solutions/also now taken off RWA eligible publishers list) chimed in the comments:

Where is this etched in stone? We have sellers and we have buyers. Sometimes the publisher buys; sometimes the publisher sells. The same is true of the author.

thus reinforcing the point that yeah, publishers are thinking about not paying authors any more (And yeah, that's why authors are worried about their future.)
The best comment on the thread belonged to the wonderful author, Laura Kinsale. Here's a teeny excerpt:

Ya know, I’m just tired of being lectured about all the “oh oh the future, yer doin it wrong now, oh look, shiny!”

The problem is, this vanity stuff ISN’T a shiny new business model. It’s older than the hills.Instead of making money off of readers buying books, it’s making money off of writers printing books.

Click on Kat Meyer's link, scroll down, and read the awesome rest.

Because of the general meshing of self-publishing and vanity publishing, this whole thing got a bit side-tracked here and there on the Intertubes with self-publishing authors coming in to defend their choices. Nora Roberts gave her opinion about Harlequin's venture:

...it’s a different matter, when a big brand publisher uses its name and its resources to sell this as dream fulfillment, advertises it as such while trying to claim it’s not really their brand being used to make money on mss they’ve rejected as not worthy of that brand in the first place."

and received a lecture from Zoe Winters about the state of publishing.

Roberts and Winters Gunfight

(cue The Good The Bad The Ugly theme song)
Zoe Winters: "I’m happy that traditional publishing has worked out for you like it has....But this isn’t the story of most people. You are like the hope that keeps everybody running on the same pointless (for most) treadmill."

Nora Roberts: ''I do wish when I participate in these discussions, I wouldn’t see a response along the lines of: Easy for you to say when you’re Nora. It does negate my opinion and my participation. And a word of advice? If you’re serious about ending ‘a pissing contest’ don’t continue to piss."

Kapow! Kapow! (my edited version)

And that's all the links to keep you busy for today. Till further development, I'll leave you with the inevitable Har Ho Spoof:

Small Beer Press/Horizon Imprint (YOU MUST VISIT!)

Next? Maybe I'll share with you my experience with Scam/Vanity Publishers when I was a newly beginning writer hoping to be published.

Happy reading!

Who Has The Baddest Balls? RWA or HQ or Mr. Scurrilous Scrotum?

Knew the title would get your attention ;-).

The Net is a cool place to hang out, especially if you have a community of friends who update you on the interesting things that happened/are happening while you are out and about trying to make a living. Today, I came home to find a few bits of surprising news in my email box, all of them somehow related to sets of balls. And I do mean THAT certain pair of balls.

1) Sneaky balls

Harlequin, the biggest name in the romance genre, announced a new division, a VANITY PUBLISHING line called Harlequin Horizon. A vanity publisher, in case you don't know, is a company that asks the writer to come up with $$$ to get published. The most famous one dating all the way back to the 50s is Vantage Press. You pay them a few thousand, and they'll print your books with your name in front and send them to you.

On the Harlequin Horizon website, they are charging any interested writers from $600-$2500 to get their books published. They are also offering book trailers for a very small fee of $20,000. (Me: Uh, yeah. They are obviously looking for very rich writers).

Harlequin's official stance is that this new line is not affiliated to Harlequin in any way. Just:

Pay no attention to all the new HHorizon logos on the eharlequin site. Or the links to the new site.

Pay no attention to the fact that rejected writers submitting to Harlequin editors are told that there is ANOTHER way to get published...through the non-affiliated Harlequin Horizon.

Pay no attention to little bait on the site teasing you that, if the book does well, Harlequin might* publish you for realz.

Very sneaky balls.

2) Brassy balls

This award goes to RWA, Romance Writers of America, a non-profit organization for romance writers 10000 members strong, many of whom are published HQ authors. Since the beginning, RWA and HQ are like BFF, with many of its original founding members the Grand Dames of Harlequin romance (Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Sandra Brown, Anne Stuart, just to name a few). RWA and HQ are like butter on toast. Fish and chips. Tar and shingle (well, I have* to bring in a roofing comparison). Thanksgiving and turkey.

But not any more.

This evening, RWA has announced to its members that, due to HQ's new vanity/subsidy publishing line, it NO LONGER recognizes Harlequin as an RWA-approved publisher. RWA doesn't approve vanity publishing because it believes that a publisher should NOT charge a writer money for publishing them, that a writer must be protected from possible scams.

HQ is a big, big presence in RWA. At Nationals, many of its editors give workshops and appointments to RWA members who are given the opportunity to pitch their manuscript. There are also many published authors signing their HQ-published books. By no longer recognizing HQ, there will be no more publisher spotlights or workshops or appointments. Harlequin editors can still attend the conferences, but they'll no longer be comped.

It takes really BIG BRASSY BALLS to ban the Big Player. This decision will have many consequences that will affect authors/members in many ways, from insider knowledge of, and access to, a popular publisher, as well as the revered RITA award, given to published books. HQ is so big, they have several categories in the RITAs--I can't stop stressing the havoc HQ's ineligibity is going to bring.

c) Hottest Balls

I leave the most interesting for last ;-). None of the above balls is relevant to a reader who doesn't write or care to be published. The only balls they care about are real ones, especially if they belong on a sexy man. Ahem.

So therefore, who has the hottest, baddest balls?

Why, I submit to you: The Case of the Scurrilous Scrotum, belonging to a man who is fated to one day eat these Peter Peppers:

And that's your Mid-Week Hot News.

Yup. You are looking at one of Time Magazine's FIVE WORST INVENTIONS OF 2009. This bra can save lives--yours and the lucky friend standing by you who isn't wearing a GAS MASK BRA.

See? This is a scientist demonstrating how to wear the GAS MASK BRA.

Question: But what if you have a tiny cup size? Would that be inadequate? OTOH, what if you have a QUAD ZZZ Cup size? Would that, like, cover the poor man's entire face?

The mind boggles, doesn't it? Don't I keep you inform about the neatest stuff?
Christmas present, mayhaps? Dear Santa, I would like a gas mask bra these holidays, please. Can it come with a pair of vibrating panties, please?

*G*

I blame it on...

And also...because I wanted to pass on the Lady Gaga earworm to as many people as possible. Yeah, I'd rather do that than save the whales.

When Your Vajayjay Is Falling Out...

I have no words for this story. When I read it, my first reaction was OW! and as this woman's ordeal continued, it became OMG, and then just silent grimacing while crossing my legs. I don't suppose it ever occur to anyone that one's vagina could fall out of one's body, right?

Well, read on:

My Bits Fell Out!

She mentioned that she didn't go to the doctor for years because she was busy with her newborn and her other young child. I guess there was no romance, no intimate nookie with her husband that might have...umm...made her discovery sooner? I do understand how being a young parent with two kids could take up one's whole life, with no time for romance like the old days, but still, I'm left wondering the obvious. Husband--were you blind for a year too?!

Other than that, this woman now has a brand new vajayjay. I cracked up at the "of a thirteen year-old virgin" part. Um. What does a thirteen year-old virgin's...never mind. Not going there.

Crackelistic New Moon Spoofs

Hey, Twilighters (yes, they have a name), the fun is just beginning for you guys!

Me, I'm just not into shiny twinkly emo-vampires, but my girlfriend's daughter and her gfs are. I've seen those mother-daughter Twilighters at the theatre. Scary. I want to eavesdrop on their breathy conversations about Edward Cullen and how sexy he is.

For those who enjoy a good laugh, there are a ton of New Moon spoofs out there. Thought I'd share some of my finds with you:

Yesterday's signing went really well--the mall was crowded and Barnes and Nobles and the coordinators from CFRWA did a wonderful job making sure everything ran like clockwork.

You can see two pages of event and author photos at Terry Odell's Website and also at Lucienne Diver's blog. I was yakking away with readers, shoppers and my table-partner, Pamela Labud, who writes paranormal historical and fantasy romance. It was also great seeing good buddies Bonnie Vanak, Linnea Sinclair, and Lucienne Diver.

I haven't been to the mall in a long time so it was interesting to people-watch as well as converse with interested and curious passers-by. CFRWA was giving out goodie bags--one's choice of naughty and nice--and I'm not surprised that the naughty ones disappeared a lot faster ;-). There was much laughter among the ladies when they were asked "naughty or nice," I tell you. Good times, good times.

When I got home, there was an email with the awesome news that Virtually Hers could be pre-ordered at Amazon!

Perfect end to a great day!

Quick Announcements

After a whole month of struggling with moving the FYEO blog to a new server, EIGHT BALL and I can now post there again. Yay.

So, yes, we're back in the business of behind-the-scenes spy games and Eight Ball teasing. Sorry for the long delay since VHers came out. I'd wanted to have more fun stuff but since falling off the roof, I have been falling BEHIND in everything. Forgive me?

Also, I'm going to be on an internet talk radio show tomorrow! Will you join me? The show is called CANNED LAUGHTER AND COFFEE.

Readers can just go to http://www.blogtalkradio.com and log in to listen. A search for the show will bring them right to all that information. There is a call in number for listeners and also a live-chat message board so they can post comments.

I'll be on at 8.30pm for 15 minutes. I hope you can make it!

I'll update this post if there are any last minute changes, since I haven't done this before.

You Know You're Watching A Horror Movie When...

1) the girl goes down into the basement alone. In her flimsy nightie. Calling out, "Hello? Anyone down there?"

2) the car breaks down in the dark countryside and the boyfriend sees a light far off and tells the girl to stay in the car all by herself while he goes for help.

3) some kid in a mask starts coming after other kids. With a chainsaw.

4) a nice normal family moves into a dilapidated house with 500 rooms that still have strange looking pictures and other people's things everywhere.

5) the new girl in town wakes up to find a vampire boy staring obsessively at her while she sleeps. And he glitters.

6) when, for fun, the slumber party girls take out an ouija board. And the camera changes to Someone Else's POV.

7) when a doll so demonic-looking no child would own starts talking. And he sounds like a late-night talk host on drugs. And he can kill even though he's just 14 inches high.

8) when the archaeologist has been warned that whatever he's digging up is holy/sacred/cursed. And then eyes gleamed out of the mask/mummified body. Or the thing moved. And there's always a landslide at the end.

9) when a group of travelers--usually young and adventurous--go to visit the Forbidden Place--usually a cemetery or an abandoned town--and then rotting things with bloodied limbs and faroff gazes start hobbling after them. And the camera starts going all shaky.

10) the creepy caretaker--nurse/butler/maid--becomes more and more sinister till she turns stark crazy and cut off the guy's foot to make sure he can't get out of bed.

Any other creepy movie tropes you'd like to add?

Happy Halloweenie ;-D.

Things Smaller & Yet Bigger Than Me

Today, I worked on a roof in a housing area that's next to designated wildlife sanctuary (meaning, you can't build on parts of the woods). Near evening, I sighted a group of six wild turkeys walking by with barely a glance in my direction, even though I was making quite a bit of noise with my nailgun.

Then, as I was packing up to leave, I caught sight of two deer about 15 feet away, just wandering in the neighbor's yard. You know how one suddenly just freeze up with delight at the sight of fragile wild creatures? So, there I was, standing three feet from my truck, holding on to a heavy compressor, trying hard to stay still and not put the darn thing down because I didn't want to startle the deer.

I was about to topple over with the effort when the homeowner came out of the house. To my surprise the deer didn't run off; they just sort of circle back to the edge of the woods and I could see them peering from the shadows. The homeowner was an older lady and she smiled at me as she started her evening walk.

"They are pretty, aren't they?" she asked.

"Yes, and not frightened of humans at all," I said, as I heaved my compressor over the side of the truck. "I thought they would scamper off at the sight of me."

"They're shy, but they know they're safe here. Their mother was killed by a car when they were babies and somehow they managed to wander back here in between me and my neighbor. We were very worried about them because there was no mommy to take care of them."

Awww. So sad. I looked at the shadows, imagining two frightened Bambis that terrible night when they lost their mother.

"They appear in good health," I remarked. "And they're big now."

"Oh yes, they're much bigger. Earlier this year, they were tiny and you could see them curled up next to each other in the evening. One would sleep, its head resting against its sibling's, while the other kept watch. They took turns like that all night. The other neighbor asked around how to feed them and they ate from the feeder, thank goodness. They're fine now, but we still worry at night."

And now I worry at night too.

I found this video morphing all of Priscilla Presley's photos from baby age to now fascinating. The way the certain facial movements stayed the same through the decades intrigued me. Also, I was amazed how the talented creator of this piece somehow made the face morphed while it was turning in the other direction. It tells a story, doesn't it? What would you title it?

Words I'm Uber Tired Of

Once upon a time, these words were interesting. Then they became abused by a million netizens who use them over and over in cultist fervor. Now I start skipping posts that have them.

Privilege, as in blaming the "white privilege" or "male privilege" for some kind of unfair treatment. Yes, the whole world is against you, but I really don't care any more after 2,315,298 posts about other people deliberately misunderstanding the label because they are more privileged or happen to have a penis or are born white or have never been in your position due to fate or circumstance.

Heifer, as an insult. To me, it's equal to and may be even worse than the C word. I think it's horrible to call another person that word and I'm a roofer, used to the worst sort of name-calling.

Webinar, a word that makes me think ofl a seminar attended by ducks. Quack. quack, quack.

___Fail! which is now becoming a fad. It was funny when it started, as in QueryFail! and RWAFail! and RaceFail! or whatever the hot controversial topic of "bad behavior" by some group or other happened to be. But overuse has made it lose its impact. It's not cool any more, cool kids. #failFAIL!

Any word affixed to the word "green" or "carbon." I am TIRED of your greening or carbon-footprinting everything, okay? It makes me see red.

<3, which stands for "love," as in I <3 Gerard Butler. First time I saw that, I thought the "I" was doing Gerard Butler from behind. Or she wanted less than three Gerards. Or someone wants to show her boobs to Gerard. It is an irritating shortform. I'll take "heart" (which is also overused) over <3 any time.

"I want to have your babies." Words that basically shows how much you love someone or something. It's even funnier when it's a blog post from the same sex to another. Girl writing to girl: "Sally is awesome! I want to have her babies!" I've seen one male writing this to a female poster, which did crack me up. He wanted to have her babies--did he mean he wanted to take her babies or did he want to impregnate her or did he want her to impregnate him somehow? Hmm.

"At the end of the day." Come on. That was so pre-2008.

That's my Monday mini rant. Do you have words you want banned from the Internet from overuse? I'm sure there are plenty more.

When I saw it on sale, I knew I had to have it. Who can resist this tongue-in-cheek joke?

Almost as good as my version with Jesus wearing Arnohld sunglasses and saying in that classic monotone, "I'll be baack."

Let's Say You Have 50 Million Bucks

Would you...

1) let someone write and sign your checks for you?

2) let someone pay stuff without your knowledge?

3) NOT noticed it until 40 million of it are gone?

Apparently, (1) and (2) are normal for wildly successful personalities who are too busy making too much money. Say, for example, Patricia Cornwell, who, according to this news article, lost said $40,000,000 because her investment company mismanaged her funds. By mismanagement, I mean, highly illegal stuff like the fund manager cutting a $5000 check for his daughter's Bar Mitzvah. From her account. Without asking her.

And here I was complaining about my bills this morning. I should've called Ms. Cornwell's fund manager to send me several signed checks to take care of my problem ;-P.

Anyway, I'm thinking that if I ever have 50 million dollars in the bank--heck, 10 million, I'm not greedy--please, God, give me the wisdom not to let someone sign my checks while I'm busy, busy, busy writing.

Why, Mr. Ralph Lauren, Why?

Is it because you think a woman's waistline smaller than the size of her head means she's so much smarter?

Is it because you just think women should look like bobblehead dolls?

Is it to tell your daughter and her friends that she can never achieve this kind of thinness to be perfect?

Is it because you've lost your sense of proportion?

I can't figure it out because you know, the Real Women looked so much more lovelier than your Photoshopped Copies.

Here are the models RL has made into aliens with no tummies. Apparently aliens don't eat:

Philippa

Valentina

Here are the same models who already look inhumanly gorgeous and whose figures are impossible for us to attain:

Not Quite A Nightmare

I think my mind is finally processing about my fall from the roof. Early this morning I dreamed I was roofing (I seldom dream about roofing any more) but this was on a somewhat rickety thing high above a very muddy sea. I was looking at some beautiful black swimmers who were naked (heh, well, don't ask me what my brain was processing about this detail, LOL) while walking up and down this roof. The roof didn't feel stable so I decided to cut the tar paper to see whether it's been nailed off properly, but when I did so, I found that an entire sheathing is missing and I could look all the way down below! I've been walking up and down this roof without falling through. All the beautiful black males watched me as I scrambled off this unsafe contraption.

The end.

LOL. My brain. It crazy.

I thought I'd have some kind of falling dream because that had nagged me quite a bit--not remembering how I landed--but I guess what I couldn't recall can't be processed ;-).

Now if only I can just dream of beautiful men swimming in the ocean minus the working on a roof with a hole bit...and me frolicking among them.

More VHers Reviews & Reactions

Two new reviews of VIRTUALLY HERS:

Mrs. Giggles

and

Babbling About Books

Very cool! Thank you to these sites for taking the time to review my ebook.

***************

I've also been getting some wonderful emails from happy readers who enjoyed VHers and Jed's antics. I even received one asking about Jed's "scimitar of love." Yes, some reader wants me to send her a pic of Jed's penis. It made me laugh. Another was happy Jed finally got an emotional punch, after all these years. Many were intrigued by the appearance of a certain missing couple. And a few asked where to buy a certain toy.

So, many, many thanks for the emails. They made this author very pleased.

And yes, I definitely have a pic of Jed's penis. I'm just waiting for enough requests to show "it." Bwahahaha.

P/S Virtually Hers was #2 this weekend! Hoppity-hoppity-bounce! And oh, you can now download VHERS onto your Kindle too!

Why Mess With The Moon?

Dear Nasa,

You must be bored.

I suggest you and your many bored friends should go buy VIRTUALLY HERS and enjoy a day off reading at the beach or something. Shooting rockets to the moon, seriously? Seriously? I mean, aren't we 10 gazillion dollars in national debt? I know, I know, it's not "your" money. Or real money, as it is.

You know what's more exciting than shooting rockets at the moon?

WAKING UP and finding Virtually Hers is #3 on the bestselling list at http://www.mybookstoreandmore.com/shop/ :-)! Look at the list on the right column. Yay, me.

Thank you, everyone, for buying my first ebook. I'm very excited at the response. It's good to know readers are looking for VHers!

And what are your plans for this weekend? Have a good one!

How To Order Ebook From Samhain

Thanks to Lady Zannah/Cleo who wrote these instructions:

1. Go to http://www.samhainpublishing.com/authors/gennita-low

2. At the bottom of the screen there is a link “Buy from MBaM” click on it

3. That link takes you to My Bookstore and More website, to the page of the book you want to purchase

4. Click on the “Add to cart” button and then click on the “Continue to checkout” button (unless you’re not done shopping)

5. If you are a new user, fill out form on the screen. If you have an account you can login on the right of the screen

6. If for some reason you don’t get sent straight to your shopping cart, the little cart icon is on the top right of the screen. Finish your checkout process and the book will be available for download once you pay.

7. You also receive an email with your transaction but they don’t send you a link to download your book that way. You can however, download from your account’s “ebook shelf” link on the bottom right hand of the screen.

8. I use Adobe Digital Editions reader but that is only because I downloaded that particular program from Adobe’s website. A regular Adobe Reader works perfectly for their ebooks. For downloading the pdf reader go to: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

9. MBaM also offers ebooks in .epub; .zip; .lit; .prc; .rb and .imp formats for those interested. Make sure to choose the format you want before you purchase the book.

10. Most important: I love Heath & Cumber babies. Happy Reading! (This last point is not needed to buy Virtually Hers ;-) )

**************************
Thank you, Cleo.

If you click on the ABOUT E-BOOKS link on the site, it'll tell you all the different ways to read an ebook. I've cut and paste a few examples:

The many ways to read an ebook

The number of ways you can read your ebook depends upon the file format you choose. Choose the format that best suits how you would like to read your book.

Adobe Acrobat is a free program for your computer or PDA. This format is the most popular: it can be read from your computer screen or imported to a Palm or Pocket PC and, if allowed by the publisher, can be printed. You can download this free reader at www.adobe.com.

HTML is the most versatile of all the formats. It can be read from your computer using your favorite browser. It can be used to convert to your favorite ebook reader’s required format (such as the Hiebook, the Rocketbook and the REB series readers) or can be sent via email directly to your Kindle. It can also be opened by a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Open Office. You can print this file, but it will print as one continuous page.

Microsoft Reader can be read from either your PC or from your Pocket PC. It’s easy to use, the program is shaped to look like a book and it has read-aloud capabilities. This reader does not allow for printing. You can download this free reader at www.microsoft.com/reader.

I hope these instructions help those of you new to electronic books. If you have any other questions, don't be shy, ask them here. I'll be glad to help.

First Time E-Book Buyers

From your emails to me, I'm getting the feeling that some of you are venturing into ebooks for the first time. Virtually Hers is coming out as an ebook first and print next year, and I'm very happy that you aren't going to wait till 2010 ;-).

If you have any questions about ebooks and the buying process, please comment under this post. I and other e-book readers will try to answer all your questions. I don't own an e-reader either, since I download the files straight into my computer and read them on my Esus laptop (small ten inch thing that's so light!). But many of those who stop by here are very savvy e-readers and they might tell you more than I can, if you're interested in purchasing one of the many devices out there.

Even if you only have a simple question about downloading from Samhain, do ask it here too. I want my readers, especially those who are trying out e-books for the first time, to have as little trouble with the process as possible.

Winding Up

The last couple of weeks have been strange--full of weird accidents and incidences. I've been tiptoeing around because it felt like I'm walking on eggshells. Here is a short list of what went wrong:

1) I fell off a roof and landed on my ribs and head
2) I almost fell off the roof again
3) I cut my finger with a pair of scissors
4) I stepped on a bucket while climbing down the ladder and fell on my butt
5) My four year old fancy-schmancy TV broke
6) My two month old fancy-schmancy phone broke
7) I miss my novella deadline because I can't seem to stay awake after my fall
8) My coffee cup broke in three pieces while I was pouring hot water into it

Can you see why I'm sighing with relief as each day comes to a close and I'm still in one piece?! I swear, this week has been nervewrecking!

And next week, I'll be holding my breath even more. Why? Because VIRTUALLY HERS is finally out. My first book since my series was dropped by Mira Books two years ago. It feels good to be back. Yet, I'm also nervous about VHers' reception.

So I'm happy to announce that VIRTUALLY HERS' first review is out and it's a satisfied customer! Woohoo!

Thank you, "I Just Finished Reading...", for such a wonderful and detailed review of Virtually Hers. It was such a treat to come home with tired feet and head-and-back aches to find this great review in my email. Maybe my fortnight of horrors have ended and good things are coming...fingers crossed....

What I'm Desperately Trying To Finish

Due to a konk on my noggin, I've been unable to write late into the night the last week. I have a novella due for the Mammoth Book of Spec Ops. I have an operative named Steve "Catch" McMillan, who is called Cat by his woman, in a race that he MUST win. I'm in a race that I MUST win too, because I need to finish this short story!

Anyway, meet Cat, who prefers to be called Catch. At the moment, he doesn't look so serene. In fact, he's hopping mad.

Those McMillan men--their females are always giving them trouble ;-).

Dollhouse Season 2-1

Are you still watching Dollhouse, the very darkly themed Whedon show starring Eliza Dushku as Echo, the brain-wiped human tabula rasa-slave? The last time we saw Echo, she was kidnapped by Alpha, the escaped Active, who then zapped all the personalities she'd been programmed with before all at once into her. The idea was to make her his Omega. As we know, he didn't succeed. Omega killed him and chose to return to her blank state.

Our dubious Knight-in-Shining-Armor didn't quite rescue Echo either. In fact, he took the gray road, agreeing to work "with" the Dollhouse PTB in exchange for...I'm not sure what...and Melon'sDecember's freedom.

The first episode of Season Two started in a confusing manner for me. Ballard seemed to be using the Dollhouse to trap a bad guy (illegal weapons dealer) who he hadn't succeeded to catch during his FBI days. Echo was programmed as his "partner" who had lured the bad guy into marrying her.

This indicated that some time had passed since last season's finale, right, because it takes time for a bad guy to decide to marry some beautiful woman and have a big wedding. Right? If so, then I have the problem of Ballard actually doing unto Echo what he professed to abhor all last season--using her for sex (and other things) without permission. Granted, the sex wasn't with him, but with the weapons dealer, but heck, that's splitting hair.

Sure, he seemed uncomfortable about it and there were some funny moments spliced into the usual gratuitous shots of Echo naked under a male, like the insertion of Ballard doing some push-ups while the bad guy was on top of Echo doing some...umm...push-downs, heh. And yeah, in the end, Echo got the bad guy, with Ballard coming to the rescue when she was in danger, but what is Whedon doing with Ballard's character? He's no longer someone we root for.

Echo's story hasn't grown much, except her telling Ballard at the end that she knows about the "others" inside her. I'm not sure what she meant when she said she was going to look for these personalities. What was the point? Ballard knew they were just composites of people that Topher created. I suppose we could interpret that as part of the Caroline "got to save things/people/causes" personality waking up, but I thought last year's little hints were stronger than this premiere's memory lapses/flashbacks.

The most interesting subplot was Dr. Saunders, who had found out that she was a doll called Whiskey, reprogrammed because of her facial scars. Wow, a tortured angsty doll?! So are we to surmise that a doll who had been given her personality for too long will become that personality? What does that say about the mind? Dr. Saunders rejected her old "life," and was afraid that they would kill her (the Dr. Saunders personality), yet there were some sparks of that Whiskey wickedness showing. She tortured Topher with a zealousness that was totally unlike her Dr. Saunders kind demeanor; she was quite menacing toward Echo, looking at the razor and then taking the lollipop for herself (instead of the usual giving the lollipop to the doll after examination). In the end, she ran away, going into the "real" world. The doll wants to be real.

And what about Topher, our evil geeky smart-mouth genius? Turns out he had a human side, giving his reasons to reprogram Whiskey the way he did. He didn't want Whiskey as Dr. Saunders to be his "yes" sidekick. He wanted someone who would question him, so he gave her a dislike of himself, even his smell. Topher is very strange indeed. Yet, he made perfect sense. Best line: "I didn't make you hate me. You chose to do that." So again, there is the idea being tossed out that a programmed doll could "grow" as a person.

The friction between Boyd and Ballard is delicious. I can't wait to see them at odds even more as the season continues, especially now that Ballard had become Echo's handler. Boyd not gonna like that, no sirree.

That last bit was damning too. Ballard is now part of the Dollhouse, whether he had any good ulterior motive, or not. So who is left to save our Dolls?

(Almost must add--Viktor and Sierra holding hands in the end = glad to see them reconnecting).

So, what are your thoughts?
