All I Want For Christmas Is PeriOrbital Hematoma....

Want to hear something funny? Okay, not funny maybe from your point of view. I had a horrible migraine last night, took a nap that lasted 6 hours and woke up with the headache still bothering me. After an hour of messing around the house (and Internet), I decided to try to sleep again but the migraine had worsened and my head felt like exploding.

Needing a visit to the bathroom, I did what I have done 1,000,000 times before when I had a headache--I stumbled, with my eyes half-closed, toward my bathroom. This time, I somehow missed the doorway, stumbled to the right too far and HULKsmashed the right eyebrow area against the door frame. I swear I saw lights. I finally managed to turn on the lights and lo and behold, the area above my right eye had swollen up into a soft goose egg in a matter off seconds. I looked like one of the Walking Dead. It hurt. Yet it didn't. Because the migraine was gone! I could see!!!

I put an ice pack over the bump and it's now gone down except over the right eyelid. But this is how to cure a migraine! Smash your face on the door or wall, folks!

Update: The swelling is gone but as I became vertical this morning, the area around my eye is getting more and more purple and black. Oh, the ribbing I'm going to get on the roof all day....

The Wealthy Way

My roofing job gives me a different view about people and the way they live. I meet many people who help expand my ideas in my books. This for example:

I'm currently working on a tile job, fixing up some damaged tiles, of a house. A HUGE house. The kind of house that is in a development where all the houses have attached HANGERS. Yup, they fly planes in and out of this place.

Anyway, I'm fixing this roof. There is an empty tract of land next to this huge house. It belongs to the owner of the house I'm on. Next door is another HUGE house. Six-car garage, private theatre, two hangers. My contractor friend is working there, expanding the basement into a playroom. For the son of the owner. The owner? Yes, it is also the same person who owns the house whose roof I'm working on.

Now why would this person own three houses side by side by side, you ask? Well, here's the plan. The family will move into the house with the new basement playroom as soon as it's done. Meanwhile, the house I'm on will get fixed up by my contractor friend to be sold. AFTER it's sold, the owner will then build an equally HUGE house with hanger, theatre, bowling alley, what-not, on the empty lot in between. And move into that. And sell the house with the playroom basement.

Got that? :D

Now, draw your character as a writer. Or plan a mystery plot around that!

Rooferauthor Is Wielding Nailgun & Pen At Same Time

This is the first time I am asked to bring my own table and chair to a book signing. That's because it's hosted by a small and newly-opened book store and there's no way the owner can find 15 tables and chairs to accommodate all the authors.

Anyway, I don't own a small/card table, so I started asking around to see if I could borrow one. The first people I approached were, of course, people I work with--construction workers. My partner didn't have one. The contractor neither. The electrician said he did but he lived too far away to make it an easy drive to his house to pick up a table (I mean, I'm not driving 120 miles round trip to borrow and return a card table, okay?). The stucco man's idea of a small table was an office desk the size of dining room table, LOL.

Finally, during break and kidding around, I told them that this was starting to be an emergency, so they all suggested for me to build myself one, since we were at a construction site, with available thrown-away materials scattered around us. Hey, they were right. I could pick up the used electrical spools and fasten two with a nail gun, one on top of the other. Hmm, 2 is too short for a chair, so maybe 3, but then I'd need a bar stool.

For the table top, I could use one of the odd-shaped plywood leftovers in the trash pile. I could make sure the books won't topple it from the connected-spools by drilling a big bolt right in the middle, through the spools. There you go, a GLow Original! A nice table cloth to pretty it up, of course.

The trouble was, I pointed out, the whole contraption was going to be quite awkward to lift up by myself. Besides, it wouldn't fit into the car, so I'd have to use the work truck. I was going to need help to carry it out of the truck bed, across the parking lot, to the book store front.

So the men came up with the brilliant idea of just loading the parts into the truck and going to book store and unloading them all in front of the place. Then I could just nail everything together and build the table right there and then, so I won't have to awkwardly drag this thing all by myself across the parking lot. Brilliant!

But, but, wait! I'm going to need the tools now! The compressor! The nail guns! The 100 foot hose! So I'm going to have to load these items up before balancing the spools and plywood in the truck bed, the bar stool, my tool belt, along with...yes, let's not forget, my books and gift basket. Heck, why not throw in the ladder? Just in case, you know?

So if you see this woman, with a tool belt and hat on, busy hammering and putting together what look like empty electrical spools and plywood in front of 14 bemused looking women sitting at their very Pretty Normal Looking Tables, it's just me, rooferauthor, Gennita Low, doing her part to make the book signing more interesting.

:-)

What, that's not a good enough incentive to get you to drive to the signing?!!

Post #2: My "Sticky" Man Killed Me

Here's another conversation I recently had with those Brazilian brothers. They never fail to crack me up, or make me feel as if I've been transported into a Monty Python skit:

He: I sticky the parrot, yes?
Me: You sticky what?
He: That wall, the parrot.
Me: Oh! You mean, the parapet wall. Yes, but come later because we're going to be working on it first.
He: Yes, I come later with the sticky parrot.
Me: Uh...hahaha...yes, do the sticky parrot later (sigh).
He: Why you laugh?
Me: It's parapet wall, not parrot. Parrot is a bird.
He: Parafit?
Me: No, paraPit.
He: A pear? (Or maybe he meant pair) Pear pit?
Me: Yes, PearPit, that's...close.
He: OK. I come sticky bear pit later, alligator.

Nnnnnnggggggah! Nnnnngggeeeehhhhhh!

The contest will run a few more days, folks, so keep your friends coming! Demon Dog is excited at the prospect of chewing on five names out the hat! (And my book and magazine collection thank you for saving them from ruin....)

Demon Dog Progress Report

He's growing out of puppyhood although he still has the fluffy chicky-ducky hair. The funniest thing is, he has these two baldish spots on top of his head where horns are usually found. You know what, it kinda feels nubbly there. Do you think...? I wouldn't be surprised.

Besides the usual yips and yaps, he makes this peculiar sound when protesting anything that displeases him. Imagine a dog who has smoked too much cigar trying to growl-talk, but all that comes out is these short little throaty noises that resemble "nnnnggah! Nnnnngahhhhh! Nnnngggggeeh!" And he keeps making them till you think that's actually a real animal sound.

The horrifying thing is, I actually have managed to assimilate it into dogspeak. You know how you sometimes growl at your doggies if they misbehave? No? Just me? (whistling) Anyway, yesterday was a mother of a humid day and I was roofing on this old house where they used planks instead of plywood. It's very difficult to nail fast, even with a nailgun since there are these big cracks in between the boards and covered with tar paper, one can't actually see to avoid them. So, every so often, one hits those gaps, and has to put down the nailer, stand up and get the tar to fill the nail holes, and try to remember not to nail that height that particular line of shingles.

Rinse repeat rinse repeat. Like I said, it was a mother of a humid day. Perspiration was pouring into my eyes. There was hardly any breeze. The tenth or so time I did that in ten minutes got me really frustrated. Suddenly, these sounds started coming out of my mouth as I glared at the object of my frustration.

You guessed right.

"NNnnnnnnggggggah! Nnnnnnggggggeehhhhhhh! Nnnnnnggggaaaaah!"

Oh dear. I caught myself doing that and it was so ridiculous I started laughing. And couldn't stop for a good five minutes. God, Demon Dog Talk has infected me. My partner thought I had been touched by the sun because first, he heard these weird noises and then saw me lying on my back on the roof, cackling like an idiot.

So now you know what sounds to make when you're frustrated. Go practice :D!

And for your amusement, go to this link and check out these Banana Republic pants. Heeheehee. Bet they sold quite a few that day!

Uber Author's Longest Ever Interview

It's Tracy Cooper Posey's OPEN MIC WITH GENNITA LOW. She asked some tough questions. I tried my best to sound intelligent (and sane). Did I succeed? Click over there and find out! And do please comment. Would love to talk to ya.

I know, I know. It's amazing what goes on in my mind besides roofing and mutant poms.

Did I tell you I was roofing an Airborne Ranger's house? He is a magnificent fellow and his wife is too because he calls her the War Department. Every evening, I ask him how he's liking the progress of his new roof, and he replies, "The War Department approves." It amuses me no end.

To Which I Had No Answer

Today, one roofer declared to me, "Hey, I know all about Shaolin. I watched every episode of Kung Fu."

He wasn't joking.

I wanted to say, "Hey, I know all about Spartans. I watched 300 three hundred times."

But he wasn't joking, you see. So I had no answer.

Request For Gennita's Funniest Adventures

A new reader emailed me, saying that she's been trying to go through all my blog entries, all the way to the beginning (gulp), because she wanted to read my funny posts like this one:

Gennita's Suspenseful Massage Incident

Quote:

"I suffer from insomnia and spend most of my nights reading. I just discovered your books and some of them were damn funny. So I decided to google you and it gave me a link to the massage incident you wrote about. It was so funny that I had to check your blog out for more of your humor. Surely you have more than that post to keep me laughing. I really enjoy your sense of humor and was hoping to find more Adventures of Jenn. Can you give me the links to some of your more memorable funny moments so I can have a good time laughing during my sleepless nights? Please?"

Wow. Thank you for buying my books and I'm glad you enjoyed them. I think going back through all my posts (from 2004!!!) would be totally insane. I can imagine all the Sexy Veges keeping you up!

Anyway, I'm not sure whether Jenn's Adventures are that interesting, but hey, maybe the following will jog some of my regular blog visitors' memories and they can laugh along at my silly moments. And of course, a source of amusement for new readers who haven't read them before:

Things Smaller & Yet Bigger Than Me

Today, I worked on a roof in a housing area that's next to designated wildlife sanctuary (meaning, you can't build on parts of the woods). Near evening, I sighted a group of six wild turkeys walking by with barely a glance in my direction, even though I was making quite a bit of noise with my nailgun.

Then, as I was packing up to leave, I caught sight of two deer about 15 feet away, just wandering in the neighbor's yard. You know how one suddenly just freeze up with delight at the sight of fragile wild creatures? So, there I was, standing three feet from my truck, holding on to a heavy compressor, trying hard to stay still and not put the darn thing down because I didn't want to startle the deer.

I was about to topple over with the effort when the homeowner came out of the house. To my surprise the deer didn't run off; they just sort of circle back to the edge of the woods and I could see them peering from the shadows. The homeowner was an older lady and she smiled at me as she started her evening walk.

"They are pretty, aren't they?" she asked.

"Yes, and not frightened of humans at all," I said, as I heaved my compressor over the side of the truck. "I thought they would scamper off at the sight of me."

"They're shy, but they know they're safe here. Their mother was killed by a car when they were babies and somehow they managed to wander back here in between me and my neighbor. We were very worried about them because there was no mommy to take care of them."

Awww. So sad. I looked at the shadows, imagining two frightened Bambis that terrible night when they lost their mother.

"They appear in good health," I remarked. "And they're big now."

"Oh yes, they're much bigger. Earlier this year, they were tiny and you could see them curled up next to each other in the evening. One would sleep, its head resting against its sibling's, while the other kept watch. They took turns like that all night. The other neighbor asked around how to feed them and they ate from the feeder, thank goodness. They're fine now, but we still worry at night."

And now I worry at night too.

A Short Synopsis Of Heading The Wrong Direction Without The Brain

As in taking a tumble. As in WHHHHhhooooosssshhh! with no bungee cord. As in going splat.

This is very a very bad position to be in, especially if you're a roofer. And especially, if you hadn't planned on it. But really, when had anyone planned on heading the wrong direction?

I've made unwise decisions before, as have you, I'm sure. Sometimes, it's just a mundane one, like looking at the drip edge and waddling along the roof and not checking whether someone had slipped a piece of tar paper under another without tacking it. Twenty years in the biz and you'd think I'd see that amateur mistake. But life is like that. You can check and avoid slippery sawdust and sand; you can tread carefully when it rain. You EXPECT trouble when you see certain things with your experienced eye, and if you still slipped, well, at least you saw it coming, and perhaps, was able to negotiate the least painful way while sliding off your feet.

On Sunday, no such thing happened. I was there and then, suddenly, I was not. The paper under me was solid, and then, suddenly, it was not. And when it took off under my feet, I understood, in that split second, that this wasn't any magic carpet ride, and that there was nothing between me and the concrete poolside below.

There was no time to panic. I didn't even manage a squeak of surprise. All I heard was my partner's very loud surprised curse while I was heading the wrong direction...straight down and with no control over my body. You know, usually, when you're slipping or sliding, your brain is looking for solutions for you. Your hand automatically reach out to brace yourself. You scream, as if to warn yourself or someone around you to save you. You bend your legs to stop the sliding.

Not this time. My brain was still up on the roof. The rest of me...WwHHHHoooshhh. And in half a second it was a WWwwHHhhacK. That was my head. Saying hi to that concrete. Brain was still gaping in astonishment. Me? Well, like I said, I registered the shout from my partner. Everything else was silence.

And in that silence, the WWWwwwwHHHacK echoed really loudly. I never lost consciousness. and then this sound erupted from inside and was torn from my vocal cords. I'm not sure what it was. I'll call it my Spontaneous Moan. Do you remember those ghost stories your nasty older brother or cousin told you about during Halloween, about walking in the dark, with nary a soul in sight, with things brushing up against you, and then this long unearthly moan came out of nowhere? Well, that's how this sounded, coming from somewhere inside me, but not from my brain, somewhere else--perhaps the soul, or even a more primitive consciousness within--rising out of me like some kind of magical portentous thunder.

And my brain? It heard me. Because I distinctly remember that clear thought at that moment from somewhere outside, that "that sounded absolutely scary-horrible and I'd better shut myself up." And immediately, in a flash, my brain was back inside my head and I could hear my partner rattling the ladder against the wooden pool fence in his hurry to get to me. And my brain was registering that not more than ten or fifteen seconds had probably just passed.

My body had already told me that I was in pain. But how seriously was I injured? I mean, would someone dying be thinking so logically? As in..."Ouch, that hurt. Stop that stupid moaning. And wow, wait till the readers read about this on the blog."

I turned. The sky was still blue and yes, I'm breathing. Deep breaths. My partner was walking toward me and calm as the pool waters not five feet from me, I told him, "I'm okay."

As if I'd know! But that was how I felt. Very calm. In pain, but not the kind that makes you go OW OW OW! or #%*&F*#K%!!! or even whimper. Just my brain and me, looking around.

"Is there blood?" I asked, although I was pretty sure there wasn't any.

He shook his head. I think he was in shock. I sat up slowly, gingerly touching myself. It hurt but I was moving. I took inventory. No dizziness. There was a goose egg on my head but seeing that I'd expected a smashed watermelon, a goose egg was good. I walked. No stumbling. I even stretched a little and found that my ribs hurt.

I thought, and this was a silly and odd thing, about my first nasty fall as a kid, down a very long flight of cement stairs, and how my grandma picked up a shoe and started rubbing my goose egg very, very hard with its sole. I remembered how she made me bawl even more, since I expected some loving hugs and reassurances, not a torture mush with the wrong side of a shoe.

Anyway, after ten or fifteen minutes, I was back on the roof, finishing up my job. Of course, I pointed out to all that someone had kindly retacked the same spot with just one fucking nail and my partner was standing on it. Sheesh. Must I show them again the danger of doing that????! Men. They'll never learn.

The next 24 hours, I was carefully monitoring myself. The goose egg disappeared in a matter of hours, which surprised me. I had developed a headache and neck ache, which didn't. My ribs had stiffened up and I found other slight bruises but everything is a surprise to me because I was expecting much, much more.

I put off sleep, chatting with y'all on Twitter and Facebook, telling you about my little adventure, so that I could see whether my headache would worsen or whether I'd feel nauseous and out-of-sorts, which would indicate serious concussion. I understood the risk I was taking but you know, a two thousand five hundred dollar deductible in one's health insurance is still a two thousand five hundred dollar deductible whichever way you think of it. I wasn't THINKING of that, mind you, but it was one of the reasons, and not the MAIN one, that made me decide to just take it easy for a while. So don't go all mommy on me, okay? I may still go see a doctor and may still take a brain scan.

And oh. Two days later, I'm still trying to remember how I landed. Did I really land on my head? I couldn't have, or I wouldn't have just a goose egg, right? So did I land on my side first, then hit my head? If so, why is there no bruising? And how did I hurt my ribs when my partner said he saw me on my back? The mystery is "killing" me, yuk yuk, yuk.

One last thing. While googling about head injuries, like any silly Internet-dependent Twerp would do, I came across a site talking about children and falling down, how there was an old wife's tale to rub the bump on the child's head hard and that THIS WAS NOT A BAD THING TO DO because it was meant to stop the bleeding, if there were any, and to tell whether the bump is a lump or a concave thing. My grandma knew more about brains than I thought.

And Brain? That was pretty funny how I caught you by surprise the other day. You didn't even manage a squeak!

Meet Best-Selling Author Gennita Ow

I'm having technical difficulties. Let's just say that falling off a roof at my old age is not the adventurous life I'm yearning for.

I'll write more about this little mishap later today but I need to get ready for...yes, work...and you know what? It takes a long time to snap on a bra when you have bruised ribs. Huh. Things I learn.

P/S If I'm blogging, needless to say, I'm okay. Alive at least. Or half. I'm not sure. I'll let you know later, when I have some more pain meds. Oh wait. Can't. Going BACK on a roof.
P/P/S I know, I know. I need to announce the winner of the Hard Jed Contest. Do I get a two day reprieve for falling off a roof? ;-)

Word Got Out

Word got out among the roofers that the Asian chick wrote books. Now everyone in the truck is taking me to a private corner to bend my ear about writing HIS story. Ahem. Can I set some rules about what is probably NOT going to be Very Romantic Elements for a hero?

1) A story that includes your 12 page rap sheet containing all your drunken driving adventures and how proud you were to violate probation so you could get your license back quicker.

2) Any scene that has you fighting with black prisoners who want to beat you up for your candy.

3) How you use to drive your titty-bar girlfriend around to her "clients."

4) A story with anything to do with how you made and lost your fortune running a naked dancers bar.

5) It's difficult to find a sympathetic heroine if you, the hero, still lives with your mother at the age of 42 (and not pay rent) because you spend all your money on beer every week.

6) If the story has the hero (you) doing anything illegal and there are four chapters about the different quality of service in each jail in which you were incarcerated.

7) It's difficult to be Alpha about the fact that you can't pass a urine test and...never mind, YOU don't want to know the rest of this story.

8) If everything you remember revolves around a date at a metalhead concert in the late 80s and 90s.

9) No, I also don't think your idea about the monster truck bash and mud baja-ing would go very well, along with the drunken party in which you lost your front teeth to the brothers who was so tough they drank each other's vomit.

10) Really, you used to party with the Mets and Detroit Tigers when you lived up north? Aw.

Sigh. Help.

What A Woman Is Up Against

Task: Prepare aluminum straps by cutting strips from prepared length. 25 pieces of lumber, 12 foot long each. Mark at 18 inch intervals and "strap" each one on these marks by using nail gun. Two nails on top. Bend each side of metal, three nails on each side. The gauge of the strap is thick enough that you need some strength to bend it. The next step is time consuming: you bend each of the sides 90 degrees and use a flat bar to chip at its angles to make sure the bend is "tight." The end result of each strap over the lumber looks something like this:
****_
__[* ]__

So, each piece of lumber has about nine to ten straps. Got it?

Last task--when above task is completed, carry each length, weighing about 30-40 lbs, to the side of the roof and heave it up to the waiting roofer.

Got that?

WOMAN
Qualifications: certified state license, very experienced
Pay scale: a few dollars higher but the company doesn't need to pay for her liability insurance and workman's compensation.
Own all the required tools: nail gun, hose, tape measure, hammer, marking pen, flat bar, utility blade
Finished strapping 25 pieces of lumber in approximately 7 hours

MAN
Qualifications: roofing labor
Pay scale: labor rate, company has to pay for liability and WC
Doesn't own any tools: no nail gun, not even a tool belt. Has to borrow hammer and tape measure.
Finished strapping 6 pieces of lumber in approximately 6 hours

The roof needs 2000 pieces of lumber strapped this way.

Question: Who would you hire for this specific task after Day One?

The person hired: the man

This happens more than you think. That's why we are stronger. Faster. Better. (cue in Bionic Woman music)

Sometimes They Walk Out Of A Book

Welcome to the three column GLow monster ;-). I'll be moving links and stuff around for better eye/space coordination. Hopefully, when I'm done, this place will look more functional, letting readers look at my books at one side and my more personal quirky collection of stuff on the other. That's the plan, anyway, but I'm by nature a messy person, so I have a feeling the end product is just going to be all frenetic and crazy like me.

If you have any suggestions or if you know how to move that pic to the middle, feel free to post. Because I need all the help I can get when it comes to computers and arranging things.

**************

Talking about quirky characters, I have one that is definitely going into my book of character sketches one day. This man is in his mid-fifties, I think, and talks slowly, like a Florida cracker (good ole boy). He wears a suit and tie. He drives a James Bond Beamer, you know, the one in the movies. He has a high-paying job/he might own (not sure) a steel factory.

Now, if you meet someone like this, what would be your expectations/assumptions? In the usual book of character sketches, you might imagine him perhaps a Southern gentleman, maybe grown up poor and is now making big bucks, and he'd have women in his life. You would definitely peg him down as someone who owns a nice house, right?

Well. Suppose you go to his residence and it's this Very Dilapidated house? The roof is so old, it's probably the original shingles, but you can't tell because there are only crumbles of what used to be a roof left. HOLES gape at the sunlight and rain, holes left unattended for so long, the surrounding plywood sheathing are warped and gnarled by the elements. Water has been pouring into this house for years.

And this is only THE FRONT SIDE of the house. The back is covered by plastic sheets, like what you see after a hurricane, except there hasn't been a hurricane in these parts for a few years. The plastic looks old and moldy. On removal, you find another layer of tar paper tacked on top of two other layers of tar paper. Then, after removing that, you find big pieces of plywood nailed on top of the shingles. It seems, as the years went by, the owner of the house has just kept putting on layers of "protection" to stop the leaks.

The roof is so bad, in fact, in a year or two, removal of shingles wouldn't have been neccessary. All you needed to do was climb up there, avoid the holes, and SWEEP the remaining shingle granules off.

Yes, you guess it. This is my current job. RB and I replaced so many pieces of sheathing that we might as well have rebuilt a whole roof deck for this place. At one point, we took out so many of them, we could look inside the house, which HAD SEVERAL big holes in the ceiling because, obviously, the roof has been leaking for years. There is a dog in the house, wandering from room to room and sleeping in the insulation that fell from the "attic." He just stares up at us everyday.

At one point, we found a nest of ants living in the wet decaying wood. RB told me to go into the garage and look for some insect-killer. When I got back, I reported: "Umm. There's nothing in the garage except for stinky clothes and a bottle of Armor All." I had to crack up at that because the Armor All was all about character.

At the end of the first day, the owner came home from work. Parked his shiny Beamer right beside the dilapidated home.

He looked up and asked, "How ya doin'?"

RB said, "Looks like it might rain tonight. We won't be able to replace all the plywood."

"That's okay. I'm used to a little water in the house."

I almost fell off the roof. Now, THAT, is character study.

Uber Smell

Ranger Buddy and I are working on this house that's in a humongous piece of property in the countryside. It's a beautiful piece of land and of course, nature is all around, especially the feral cats. There must be about 100 kitties that come and visit, and the homeowners are generous people who feed them, but this means they come everyday, and they treat the outside as their living room.

So, imagine the bushes around this house as the giant kitty litter box for feral kitties for years and years. And imagine, Ranger Buddy and I, crawling around on our hands and knees cleaning up roofing debris, smearing the dirt all over our clothes and hands. Imagine the smell of kitty poop embedded in your hands that even soap can't get rid of.

Now, as you know, RB has school and he takes evening/night classes. So, he changes into clean clothes at the end of the day and then tries to clean off as much as possible. He washes. He scrubs. Then he puts on deodorant. On his fingers.

He turned to me: "How do I smell?"

I sniffed the air. Sniffed again. "Like Kitty Poop eau Old Spice."

My Uber Advice Of The Day

When hanging upside down, DO NOT SNEEZE.

I shall put that in the GLOW fortune cookies for sale soon.

I'm working on revising the next BBW chapter for you (as soon as I wind down). I'm curious to hear your take:

What do you think is going to happen next between poor Killian and poor Jaymee? ;-)

Also, what other things shouldn't you attempt to do while hanging upside down from the roof?

Predict My Uber Day

7.00am (me snoring)

Phone rings. Me (growly and half asleep): Yo?

Customer whose roof I'm going to today (CWR): May I speak to Jenny?

Me (trying to wake up): Yeah, that's me.

CWR: When will you be out here on my roof?

Me (checking clock): Umm...*8? 8.30?

CWR: Okay.

Hangs up. Me, rolling over to catch that extra five.

8.15 Me in shower. Phone rings. I thought maybe RB since he's cking on materials. Ran out of shower.

CWR: Hello?

Me (dripping on my floor): Yes?

CWR: When will you be out here?

Me: As soon as possible. We have to get materials and other stuff.

CWR: Okay.

8.30 Me getting ready. Phone rings.

Me: Yes?

CWR: Did you get the materials yet? When are you coming out?

This man is 67 years old. I want to cry.

Me: My partner's picking up the material. We'll be out there soon. Like maybe 9.15. But it could be around 9.30. I can't say because I'm not picking up the material.

CWR: Okay. What color will the shingles be?

Me: (pause) Same color as the shingles on your house now. (It's a VERY SMALL REPAIR JOB).

CWR: What color will the ridgevent be?

Me: White like before.

CWR: Okay.

Hangs up. 8:45. Phone rings.

Me (in my best cheerful voice): May I help you?

CWR: My wife wants brown ridgevent.

Me: Okay.

CWR: When will you be out here?

Me: (smiling through my clenched teeth) I'm on my way.

CWR: Will you have the brown vents?

Me: No, my partner is getting the materials. I'll let him know to pick the right color up, okay? See you in a bit.

In the truck. Phone rings. I don't want to answer. I really don't. But it's like the horror movie with the door creaking and I have to go check it out.

Me: Yes?

CWR: Did you talk to your partner? Is he bringing the brown ridgevent out?

Me: Yes.

CWR: When will he be here?

Me: (laughing) I don't know.

CWR: Will you be here soon?

Me: Of course. But I can't do anything anyway, till my partner shows up.

CWR: Oh. When will...

Me: I'm driving so I can't talk. See you when I get there.

I'm now at the convenience store getting drinks. The phone rang. It's CWR. I sat in my truck, drinking my morning coffee. I've decided to waste some time blogging instead. Why? Because I don't want to go to work today.

When Two Roofers Talk Literature, Pt. Deux

Ranger Buddy likes to wear singlets to work (In his youth, they called them singlets, not wifebeaters, okay?) Anyway, he's been teased about it at Lit class because, you know, Marlon Brando wore a wifebeater in Streetcar (Rrrrawl!).

Anyway, yesterday, at the store, the female cashier was checking RB out. Her little badge said her name was "Stella."

RB handed over the money and said, "Stella, hmm...Streetcar Named Desire, right?"

Stella: ***giggle giggle*** Yes, how did you know?

RB (in his best Brando, also known as New Joysey, snarl): Here's your plantation right here, Stella! Stellaaaaa!

Stella: ***giggle giggle***

RB beamed, turned to me and bobbed his head up and down like he had done something impressive. He'd used up two quotes this week already, the other one was when he was locked out from his truck and his teacher had lent him her cellphone. RB had said, "I've always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Me, next in line, rolling my eyes, in a bored tone: Thousands of years have passed him right by, and here is Stanley Kowalski, bearing the raw meat home from the kill in the jungle.

I smirked back him. I'm sure I misquoted, but hey, it's been a long while since I saw the movie, 'kay. RB snarled.

Stella: ***eyes wide, not sure now what she was dealing with***

Just two dirty and sweaty roofers, my dear, who are too damn competitive for their own good. RB's lucky I'm not crazy enough to go to Spain with him to run with the bulls. I don't think he and I would survive trying to outdo each other while trying to run with a herd of 2000 lb animals with sharp horns.

Today, an acquaintance at Shit and Grits recommended me as a roofer for his neighbor, who's looking to replace his roof soon. This person called me and I went to his house to give a quote. After climbing up on his roof, examined its condition, and looking for possible rotten wood, I gave a summary of my findings and a quote.

This man looked me straight in the eye and said, "So my friend tells me you're a published author, with, like, six or seven books. Surely you don't need that much money. How about taking a thousand dollars off the price?"

I don't think I've ever lost roofing business on the account of me being a published author before. I wasted $3.25 on gas that I could have spent on icecream, dammit.

Uber Strange Way To Pick A Roofing Company

Yes, another brilliant moment of wordplay meets crazy:

The uber-roofer was giving a bid on a re-roofing job. Everything was going pretty normal--going up the roof, checking the job over, making quick estimation, coming down the ladder to talk to the owner. While this was going on, the owner, a woman, was standing outside and staring up at the roof.

When we got down, the conversation started normally enough, with talk about the age of the roof, blahblah, possible leaks, blahblah. We gave our bid and then when she said she had other roofers coming to look that afternoon, we agreed that yeah, it was always good to have multiple bids to make a big decision like re-roofing.

Suddenly the wind shifted.

"Oh, I don't hire people by their bids," the woman said. She gave us a hard stare. "I check their auras."

I am not kidding. She said "auras."

At this point, Mr. Linguist in my group of learned roofers chimed in excitedly, "Oh, that's okay, you'll like my auras!" At which, he lifted his shirt to show his "auras." "My old lady says they are nice and pink."

His auras are nice and pink.

:::dies laughing:::

I don't think we'll get the job. I've sort of seen Mr. Linguist's auras with the weird prison tattoo above one of them.

Needless to say, I didn't show her my auras either.
