There are a bunch of shorts on YouTube by authors talking, tongue-in-cheek, about writing. I had a good laugh when I came upon this one:
Awesome, isn't it? :D If you're a frequent stroller of Romancelandia, you'll recognize some of the famous inhabitants and inside jokes on recent flare-ups and blow-ups.
John Scalzi, one of my favorite bloggers and authors, went on hiatus for a few weeks while he set off to Australia (arrrgh, I'm so jealous of that) for a convention. He's an interesting bloke and I "get" him, so I've been a fan since I was a young roofer ;-); in fact, my internet relationship with him has grown from Netscape Navigator at $3.99/month to Internet Explorer 8.
During his holiday, I didn't go to his blog because although he had some wonderful writing guests, it wasn't HIM, you know? So, after remembering that he would be back around mid-Sept., I happily set out to catch up on all the news I've been missing while he was gone.
First, if you haven't heard, he has an awesome project with Wil Wheton to fight lupus. Here's the announcement from his blog:
Wil Wheaton, John Scalzi and Subterranean Press are proud to announce the publication of CLASH OF THE GEEKS, a special and fantastical electronic chapbook. It features stories by Wheaton, Scalzi, New York Times bestseller Patrick Rothfuss, Norton Award winner and Hugo Best Novel nominee Catherynne M. Valente, Hugo and Nebula Award nominee Rachel Swirsky, and others, and is for the benefit of the Michigan/Indiana affiliate of the Lupus Alliance of America.
The chapbook is available in multiple DRM-free electronic formats at http://unicornpegasuskitten.com. It is free to download, but voluntary payment is strongly encouraged, via Paypal or by tax-deductible donation, with links to both provided at the unicornpegasuskitten.com Web site. All proceeds from this chapbook will go to the Michigan/Indiana affiliate of the Lupus Alliance of America.
Yes, it's a free download, but for $5 (or more, if you could afford it), you get some very fine writing from wonderful science fiction authors. AND CHECK OUT THIS COVER:
How could you resist THAT (Yes, that's Scalzi, who, in real life, isn't green)?
So anyway, geeks and fans of geeks, please help out a good cause and, with a small donation, get this chapbook.
And second, if that giant kitten doesn't get you, check out the following video, also swiped from John's site. This is what kitties in heaven sing like:
Every time I hear this song, my heart starts pounding and I know BIG things are going to happen. Like an alien invasion.
Or humongous space gorillas pounding drums with bones and some giant baby floating above them laughing at the weird monument that shot out of the land like some subliminal message about erections and the future of mankind.
Or lots and lots of slo-mo dying of epic proportions, hopefully, with the good-looking nicely muscled heros (or bad guys) wearing codpieces and capes.
Or when a magic Ring get a bunch of pointy-eared people snarling and frothing. Or a credit card commercial. Take your pick.
This song is that BIG. And no one could ever sing along because it's full of prophetic words that only the wise understand. Until now. Like klaatu barada nikto--did Keanu even comprehend that phrase? I bet that song would have been in the background while he played with that Robot.
Finally, I get the profundity of this song. It is my duty to share it with you, my dear readers.
Sing along now. Especially when the fireworks are booming overhead this weekend. Feel the BIGNESS.
Here is a funny video of what most of us authors experience when we do our rounds of booksignings. I don't like doing them alone any more because of what Parnell Hall went through ;-). Also, never sit beside Sherrilyn Kenyon (Low is near Kenyon) during one. Much as I love, LOVE, that woman, you'll end up doing nothing but exercising your smiling muscles.
Unless, of course, you're a Mega Author. Totally different then!
I miss a lot of funny Kimmel stuff because I watch Letterman and the Incredible Craig Ferguson, but he does do some truly excellent shorts. And his ongoing m/m "love" with Ben Affleck cracks me up.
I was googling and researching for a "cute" sidekick for my (urban fantasy pseudo-satire) Viking Dude heroine (demon slayer). Cute with a little bit of magic, I thought. Hmm. Shifter abilities? Okay, of course. Maybe give him an Asian background? Why not? Something embarassing about him to be revealed later? Oh yeah, that sounds like fun.
Muse was having a bit of fun with me.
Then I found the entry on the Japanese TANUKI, a rodent-dog shapeshifter with humongous balls. Cute and sidekickish, yes! So I googled some more, looking at pictures and already playing with plotlines and jokes.
Then I saw this Japanese commercial below, a KIDDIE commercial. Wait for the ending. Wow. I don't remember this in my version of Red Riding Hood ;-). You'd think the big bad wolf might have changed his menu after seeing that!
Hey, Twilighters (yes, they have a name), the fun is just beginning for you guys!
Me, I'm just not into shiny twinkly emo-vampires, but my girlfriend's daughter and her gfs are. I've seen those mother-daughter Twilighters at the theatre. Scary. I want to eavesdrop on their breathy conversations about Edward Cullen and how sexy he is.
For those who enjoy a good laugh, there are a ton of New Moon spoofs out there. Thought I'd share some of my finds with you:
You know you want to try it. You know you want to make it like the Jedness' likeness. You know, Hell's "Scimitar of Lurv." You know it's going to be the funnest thing to do while you're bored.
I dare ya.
I'm going to offer a workshop on pornigami at RWA next year, what d'ya say? And yeah, these would make fantastic napkin placements for an important dinner! :D
Like swimming laps and you're on lap 70 out of 72. Like running a marathon towards the finished line. Like being trapped five stories above the air and needing a bathroom, and you can see the person with the ladder walking towards your building...very slowly....
Edits for Virtually Hers! Yes, I'm almost there. Smell the baking bread!
So, humor my inability to make sense for a while longer, 'kay? Speaking of humor, if you're a Buffy fan and you have the same reaction about Twilight's Edward as I do (I have a teeshirt that says "And then Buffy killed Edward. The end), you HAVE TO watch this video below. It is classic. Genius. So damn funny.
Now why can't I procrastinate creatively like that?!
Nothing serious going on on the Interwebs. Why squabble on a Saturday when you can giggle at other more controversial things, like a Mr. Hong Kong WET swimsuit contest?
You don't need to understand Cantonese to know what's going on on this video though I'm still scratching my head about the female alien dancers. But I must agree, the cutest smile (#12) beat out the buffest bod (#4) :D.
And umm...don't click, Vince and other male readers, unless you're curious, hee.
Courtesy of Jeri Smith-Ready, who writes a great vampire urban fantasy series, by the way. Laugh-out-loud lines in this classic Bonnie Tyler video, including "mullets with headlights," LOL. Enjoy.
It's fun the week before the RT convention because I get to think of costumes to wear at the balls, as if it's Halloween/Mardi Gras/Sci Fi Expo coming up. After a few hours mulling and checking on Tweeter this morning, I think being a Sparkly Vampire ala Edward would be an easy get-up. And I have to do is look intensely at the wine glass all night. And then, on Faery Ball night, I can wear the same sparkly stuff and claim it's angel dust! Yeah, an all-for-everything, one-size-fits-all-balls sparkly costume change!
And here is a funny Saturday laugh-out-loud video (thanks to John Scalzi) about males, sports, and dating:

GLow Along
Welcome! The GLow world is full of uber-spying news and roofing fun stuff. If you're new, be sure to scroll down and look for all kinds of Intel on the right side of the blog. All GLow spylettes can't go through Intel training without torturing the Uber-Subservient Chicken or watching GLow's personal assistant. If you're a regular spylette, rewatching those training videos once a year is mandatory. That's an order from TPTB.
