This is for those of us who are too busy to read the entire book by Stephanie Meyer:
New Moon, the Condensed Version
Thank you, Mandy, from Smexybooks for giving me a good chuckle this morning. Great use of dolls!

Courtesy of Vanessa Jay, who knows I love all things Buffy and Whedon.
BUFFY EATS MUFFY
Whedon claims it's just a one-time, girl experimenting thing. Oh, LIKE ANITA BLAKE, huh?
Sheesh. I don't know what to say. Except maybe Whedon should consider a threesome next time? Angel-Buffy-Spike. Yeah, just experimenting, Whedon, come on!

I finished Lara Adrian's Midnight Awakening yesterday. I now understand why everyone compares this series to JR. Ward's BDB series--the "brotherhood," the brotherhood-together "compound," the isolation from the rest of their more gentile kind, with the odd Old World culture, the weaker "female." There is one difference, though -- no Virgin Scribe, heh heh.
I enjoyed it, although this is going to be the last vampire book I'm going to read for a while, I think. I love them but I'm getting that feeling one gets when I have had too much turkey during Thanksgiving and I'm just lying there on the couch with the TV (book) on and nothing much registering. Zoning. Vampires. How can anyone zone out when there are vampires and blood and capes and teeth and sex and aliens/vampire makers? Yup. I've partaken too much.
Midnight Awakening can be read stand-alone, although it's the third book in the Midnight Breed series. The hero and heroine are different because they both have had their 'mates' killed years ago and are essentially loners. They both have their agendas and they came together partly because of them.
Exchange of blood is essentially the bonding element here. During the sexy scene, I kept thinking, man, vampires must buy a lot of new mattresses. I mean, all that extreme bloodletting and sexxing up got to leave a mess and who wants to clean up after that?! LOL. It's not like they are gentle lovers, you know. From the description, there's some wild action going on--mouths attached to veins, bodies all lunging here and plunging there, sometimes they have claws, even, and definitely fangs ripping flesh. What a mess. Yup. I definitely ODed on vampires.
And let's not get into werewolves, 'kay? Then I start hallucinating about gobs and tufts of hair in the bed too. And this from a woman with mutant poms jumping in and out of hers. The other day, I was rereading my favorite Keri Arthur (whom I glommed last year) and a thought startled me. You know why they like to do it doggie-style? Well, obviously, since they're werewolves...but I mean, I was thinking, who would want to look up in the throes of passion and see her partner's eyes start to glow red and hair sprouting all over? Sigh. Guess I ODed on werewolves too.
So, are you going through my phase about certain types of books? And what odd thoughts go through your heads when you're reading them these days ;-)?
Yes, I really want to know whether all those tats will scare the bejeezus out of you or make you want to heal him, heh heh.
I know you guys...you're just going to start recommending more vampire books to me because you know I'm a sucker for hot paranormals.

So Shit and Grits is abuzzed with news that Ranger Buddy is going to run with the bulls. Everyone is grilling me about it, like I'd know why????! But I do know that he's serious...he'd bought tickets and booked some kind of five-star hotel stay in Portugal that costs a million dollars a night, or something like that. Then, afterwards, Spain.
Anyway, RB has been issueing some kind of coded challenge to me. Take the following video as a parody of a conversation he and I had. I'm the gentleman on the left and he's the one on the right. Substitute certain words in the dialogue: When the gent on the right offers the gent on the left a yacht, a mansion, etc...replace with a motorcycle, a whole room with books, a thousand dollars' worth of Ichiban products. The mangoes, however, stay ;-).
I'm not kidding, the above conversation was remarkably similar in tone to the one I had. Yes, I did tell Ranger Buddy that I viewed running with the bulls equivalent to certain death. RB thought about it a moment and said, with equal seriousness, "How about putting your head in a lion's mouth?"
I do think he has gone mad....And I'm amused that he thinks I'm crazy enough to join him. Yeah, skydiving. Yeah, hanging upside down from a three-storey building with him holding to my foot. Yeah, walking into a biker bar in the middle of redneck territory. But running with the bulls? Nope. No, no, no, no, no. Being chased by 3000lb bulls up a narrow cobblestone street with a few hundred other drunken idiots is not my idea of adrenaline fun.

Also, I saw Moonlight, the new vampire TV show, for the first time last night. Interesting, but not quite sure whether I will be watching it weekly. Cool to see a vampire that's only sixty years old and not hundreds, AND from 1950s USA and not 1700s Ireland/France/exotic island. The two male vampires' quick and dry repartee was sort of like the Supernatural brothers, wasn't it?
However, I'm getting tired of the now-fashionable protagonist voiceover, giving a beginning, or a comment, or an ending thought. It's called LAZY WRITING, folks. I first noticed it in Desperate Housewives, with the voiceover of a dead person. It was unique then, and gave a sense of mystery to the episodes. Then it's in a dozen other shows--Men In Trees, Pushing Up Daisies, Grey's Anatomy--somebody's internal monologue, telling, telling, telling, substituting dialogue with emo-looks from the characters as mood music tricks the audience. Lazy, lazy, lazy.
Okay, didn't mean to rant today. Back to Moonlight, the newest vampire TV show. He's no Angel, for sure. The angst and the anger? Not edgy enough. And the comic timing with deadpan delivery? Nope, he's no Boreanez ;-). But the show's storyline has potential. Any of you caught it on the tube yet?
P/S. In the video above, that's Tim Kang, the guy from the Cingular commercials.

I have been so busy, inundated by life, that I haven't had time to go through my loot and read. What are you guys reading out there? Any great finds?
I was talking to a friend about how historicals are taking more risks these days. Have you noticed? There are still Regency Rakes, but you also get the Victorian Buffy in the Gardella Vampire Chronicles by Colleen Gleason. There's Valdez and Campbell, two authors who wrote "controversial" historicals that got a lot of buzz. Gaelen Foley is doing historicals set in India. I include Shana Abe's dragon-historicals. Elizabeth Hoyt. Pamela Clare's historicals. Anyone else you want to add to this list?
It's good to see that! I'm tired of Regency Balls, almost as tired of new vampire series.
Of course, I'm never sick of the Original Sexy Angsty Sexy Vampire/Slayer evah, a vampire named Angel.
I love that vampire's story so, sigh. And the episode in which he could walk in sunshine again? And found that he hungered for food? And then learned that the price was the loss of his strength, thus his mission? And the sacrifice he decided to make? Best. Episode. Evah. Sniff.
Angel started my love affair with angsty vampires. Of course, David Boreanez definitely helped ;-).
Who was your first vampire?

A study in male POV.
You need to watch this! Hawt!
Can you see Lestat and Louis in this scene? The song is a version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.
