Crazy Dream

well, I don't know what to make of it, except maybe I've been editing too much and my brain has gone cuckoo. Last night, I had two dreams--same dude, in black, writing calligraphy. Beautiful Chinese calligraphy, at that. Except that I don't read Chinese that well, having forgotten much of the characters...I can read some and not all.

Argh.

I woke up thinking I have a message and if it's a warning, I'm in so much trouble since I have no idea what it is ;-).

Or maybe it's an inspiration from the Muse? So, to make use of it, I'm making Armando Chang do calligraphy. He's cryptic enough and should be able to spout off Chinese idiomatic expressions, right? And wouldn't it be romantic if he writes Chinese poem to his mate, when I find her in my consciousness?

No...! No thinking of Armando's story. I have edits to finish and Virtually One to write!!!

Almost, Almost, Almost

It's like waiting for the water to boil.

Like watching the drops filling up a bucket.

Like swimming laps and you're on lap 70 out of 72. Like running a marathon towards the finished line. Like being trapped five stories above the air and needing a bathroom, and you can see the person with the ladder walking towards your building...very slowly....

Edits for Virtually Hers! Yes, I'm almost there. Smell the baking bread!

So, humor my inability to make sense for a while longer, 'kay? Speaking of humor, if you're a Buffy fan and you have the same reaction about Twilight's Edward as I do (I have a teeshirt that says "And then Buffy killed Edward. The end), you HAVE TO watch this video below. It is classic. Genius. So damn funny.

Now why can't I procrastinate creatively like that?!

Been Under The Weather

Pardon the growls. Deep in revisions and fighting a stuffed head and nagging migraine, ouch ouch ouch. It's difficult to write about love and emotional stuff when I feel like a giant slug about to turn into that thing in alien. Sigh.

Maybe standing on my head might help.

When I'm stuck on a writing problem I eat a lot. I think it's the bane of doing work at home because the fridge is handily nearby. So I'm just munching and munching and stomping about the house in between trying to write. And oh, torturing Bad Puppy. Of course, that goes without saying. It's fun to torture Bad Puppy; he gets jealous when I play with his toys. Silly, I know, but hey, Sick Author here, 'kay?

Any advice to fight off sickness and get the brain cells working again?

Goals for the week:
1) Finish the major portion of revisions for VHers
2) Get ready panel stuff for RT 2010
3) Stop eating icecream like it's a real meal
4) Read a book--it's getting weird just rereading VHis and VHers over and over....
5) Placate Viking Dude who's not happy at being shunted aside
6) Buy air tickets for RWA trip if I'm not driving (have I told you? I'm considering driving up to DC. Am I crazy?)
7) Umm...pay bills...lotsa billlllllls...help!

What are your goals for the week?

To Sleep, Perchance To Avoid Writing

I toted 300 12-foot length lumber boards from trailer to garage at my jobsite yesterday and immediately konked out when I got home. Exciting life, eh? Now I missed my two hours of writing time.

For those of you asking me what Viking Dude is about, emailing me that it doesn't sound like a romantic spy intrigue--well, it's not. Viking Dude is an urban fantasy/alternative fantasy. I started it while writing for Mira Books and awaiting their decision on Virtually Hers. Since I couldn't submit any romantic suspense while under contract, I decided to try my hand at writing another genre. My current favorite books are from the urban fantasy genre, especially those with heavy romantic elements, and Viking Dude seems to be walking in that direction, using many of the themes you find in UF.

It's first POV, male, and yes, the hero is/was a Viking. He's a dude in the Present. But he has powers that makes him very attractive to magic-practicing people. No, he's not a vampire. Or a werewolf. Or any kind of shape-shifting alpha. In fact, he isn't quite sure what he is, except that he can manipulate time in certain ways, and as the story progresses, he isn't even sure whether he wants to find out what he is.

If you've been following the blog, I talked about an editor wanting to see more than the proposal and first chapter my agent sent out, so I'm trying to polish and tighten up Chapters Two and Three quickly, quickly, quickly. And ya, I've been trying very hard to write and rewrite and edit and rewrite while I'm on my four hour commute to and from my job site, but it hasn't been easy. It's hard to concentrate with a noisy truck swerving back and forth among heavy traffic. Can I spell constant headache and back cramps?

Then I went and konked out last night. Argh.

On the good news front, I've gotten another order from the Australian bookseller for Big Bad Wolf, which brings total sales to 380 books. We're nearing 400 copies, woohoo! Of course, that's like a drop in the bucket compared to the sales number of my other books, LOL. I know there are many who push self-publishing as the next zen of publishing history, but really, if you aren't Stephen King, you aren't going to sell enough copies to justify a career. BBW is considered as having done quite well, by the way, considering that it had barely any publicity whatsoever. Thanks to word-of-mouth by many of you, my wonderful readers, it's still selling every week! I'm hoping to celebrate the 400th sale next week, so you know what to do...word-of-mouth. ;-D

While I work on Viking Dude for the editor, the anthology of short stories about the SEALs is on hold but it'll be my next project, I promise...unless something Big comes up, like Virtually Hers/One or Viking Dude getting sold. Then I'm going Not Ever Sleep Again because I need to write, write, write like a maniac.

So, what have you been stressing about lately?

Writer's Blues

I'm struggling. I've never written a proposal for an urban fantasy/fantasy before. Talk about info-dumping from hell. It's like the never-ending back-to-the-past stuck-in-the-future story, but I don't think that description is going to be "the hook." Argh.

Why can't I just say, "Here is Viking Dude and he's stuck in the future, hiding from bad guys from the past"? No, I have to explain the past, the world-building part, and that's where everything gets convoluted. Usually, in a proposal for a romantic suspense, I don't need to explain the world of spies too much, since everyone understands what black ops. mean and the time-line is usually in the present. But with fantasy, I have to explain the world I built, and with a time-traveling element that goes back to way, way in the past, to Greek mythology even, I get tied up in details that have nothing to do with the plot. Argh.

I hate writing proposals. I actually prefer to talk about it one-on-one with the editor. For some reason I don't feel lost when I'm explaining my vision in person.

******************

Been trying to set up Big Bad Wolf for Amazon's Kindle. It doesn't take PDF files! It wants the files to be set up in HTML. I suck at HTML. So...another week without BBW for Kindle people, so sorry.

******************

My book count this month is pathetic. Here's what I read:

The Host by Faith Hunter (Engrossing; I loved it. Read it twice. Just cannot believe there's no fourth book!)

Dark Matter by Cameron Cruise (evil twin story with a psychic twist that turns into full-blown mind-sucking out-of-body visit to Atlantis for the ultimate power. Lost me a bit in the middle. Not enough romance for me.)

Dark of Night by Suzanne Brockmann (Totally heartbroken. Just imagine if Alex Diamond and T end up with other people in one book. Yes, I'm bitter, heartbrokenly bitter.)

Eternal Seduction by Jennifer Turner (Interesting beginning; strong first three chapters. A bit of an odd vampire book that can't decide whether it's dark or funny (a ten thousand year-old vampire calling a thirty thousand year-old vampire "dad" cracked me up) with very little happening in the middle chapters while the heroine goes through her "change," but the characters kept my interest.)

So, what's your book count?

Long Birthday Mumbo-Jumbo: Standing Up To Time

Today's topic is going to jump all over the place, but I'm going to attempt to make it work thematically ;-).

As you know, I've been trying to get ready a new proposal package to submit to different houses. It can't be a romantic suspense, which I write well (even if I say so myself, ha), because I'm still under contract with MIRA. I have two more books coming out from them and yes, as long as my publisher doesn't put them out into the world, I'm stuck in limbo. Virtually Hers is in their hands. I pray every night that they will find a slot for it, that somehow, a miracle would happen and they will suddenly see the light and publish it.

Yes, I owe you a longer and clearer explanation but as long as people are negotiating and talking, hopefully thinking and saying good things about me, I'm bound by business etiquette not to discuss it in public for now. Suffice it to say that I'm a very frustrated writer at the moment because time is of the essense in this business. The more my book is delayed, the more momentum I'm losing in building a readership. It's a helpless feeling because the process after the writing is entirely out of my hands. Everything I say or argue or point out feels like a hopeless cause.

So I fight against this time thing by doing what I can only do--write. The challenge is to write something other than romantic suspense because in this business, as long as you are contracted writing one genre for a house, it's not a good thing (in fact, it's not allowed, really) to write the same genre for a rival publisher. That makes sense to me, of course. As a businesswoman, if I sold my roofing business to some entity, I can't go out and open another roofing business in the same neighborhood.

Thus, in that part of my mind, the realm where all my characters live and grow, chatter and argue for my attention, an old character moved to front and center and started to haunt me. I've shoved him way behind the others because he scared me. A Viking cowboy with a big magical sword. A what? Yeah, you heard me, a Viking cowboy. The more I "talk" to him and get to know the story, the more I step back and try to run away. You see, he's a magical time-traveling Viking and that's why he's a cowboy of sorts. And to make it even more scary, he's telling me of his ties to ancient Greece. Yes, see my head? Head, meet desk.

The challenges of writing a new genre are both exciting and scary. I have to do it because I want to make a living out of my writing. Right now, starting another romantic suspense, and let's face it, I have plenty of stories eagerly waiting to to be told ***ahemALEX and Tcough*** that readers want, would be easy. But it's not going to go anywhere while I'm waiting for my Virtual Problem to get untangle.

So with the time factoring in, I'm attempting to write about a time-traveling Viking, a Summoner of Time, with lots of evil time bandits coming after him. Got that? Yah. The working title is Quantum Leap With Time Traveling Viking Dude. And to make it even harder, I'm thinking--sort of urban-fantasy, but with a male POV first person. Why? Because I'm tired of the youngish coming-of-age super-heroine story in the urban fantasies that I'm reading. Not that I don't like them--I LOVE urban fantasies--just that I'm trying to find a different angle to tell that kind of story.

Look, it's also my birthday month and I'm treading water here, 'kay? It's like looking at the mirror and asking myself what do I have to do to make myself look a little different today? LOL. I still LOVE myself, but I also want to make myself look better sometimes. Like any woman, there's the fear of aging lurking in the mirror somewhere, the fear of failure because time's not on my side.

Likewise, I'm treading water with trying to write something different because time isn't on my side career-wise either. I have to write because roofing isn't paying like it used to and I have to write something I love, which is romance and action, but I can't do my usual thriller romance either because of technical (business) problems, so I need to broaden my skills and go for the scary Viking Dude. Why is he scary? Well, let me count the ways.

First, it isn't the challenge of writing in male POV. That's easy for me. But would readers take to reading a male voice in their head? And I'm thinking about sexy scenes too. It's got to be weird for some, I don't know. I haven't reached that part of the experiment yet--writing sexy stuff in first POV from a male perspective, I mean--but the thought of it is suddenly sending me upstream in panic. Because of course, he's going to have different sexual interests because he's a man and he's sort of immortal and yes, he looks like a Viking Greek god with these magical powers.

And that's not counting problem #2, the time-traveling part. I have yet to solve the problem of the cultural stuff happening. This isn't your mama's time travel where once the character is in a different time zone, so to speak, everything is fine and dandy with just change of climate and clothing. There's a reason why the Viking Dude is running through time. He's also thoroughly in love with the modern centuries and have chosen them because heck, where else could he hide but in the age of information, with its I-pods, laptops, e-readers, wireless thingies, and heya, sports cars? So I need a damn good reason to send him back in time to search for his roots and fight the good fight. So the problem is, what the heck has he been doing all these years of wandering?

***By the way, I know I'm throwing out a lot at you, but look at this post as the GLOW attempt to use NOPAIN on you. Haha. I knew that would make you sit up a bit. For those who have no idea what NOPAIN is, never mind. It's just one of those things an author gets to do when she has a readership. (You see now why I need to build the readership?)***

Where was I? We were talking about time. How I'm standing up to and against time and isn't it strange that my Big Viking Dude is reflecting on my reality. As usual, I'm using my own life to fuel my imagination. I'm still writing, but it has to be of something different. It's exciting and difficult, and of course I fear failure. Viking Dude--he's wanting so much and yet, not sure what it is he wants. And then of course, that's the destiny bit. You can't have a Big Hero without the Big Destiny. It's funny that I'm making him a Time Summoner who has to stand up to time, something I'm sort of doing; it's funny that he's in flux and I'm frozen; it's funny that he has all the time in the world and I feel that I don't.

It's my birthday month, dammit, so I'm allowed to meander philosophically ;-).

Oh, and back on the Olympic topic, the greatest athletes meet in this place once every four years and they too have this one moment in time. For most of them, they've worked for this one time to get their medal. Yet there are those who succeed in returning again and again (Torres is one kickass mama made of awesome sauce and I want to be her, like NOW) in spite of the challenges time throw at their minds and bodies. For my birthday wish, I'm wishing mighty hard that I'll succeed in my stance too, that like Lezak, in that incredible relay, I'll find that something deep inside me to push me ahead past the my problems.

So, uh, how's your Sunday? LOL.
