The signing at Altamonte Springs was lovely and even the drive back and forth on the scary I-4 onto 436 wasn't the nightmare it usually is.  The mall was full of shoppers and many stopped by to browse among the big circle of authors surrounding the fountain.

Usually, a signing by one's lonesome self is an excruciating experience, especially if no one knows you're an author and the only people stopping at your table wants to know where the rest room is.  But with a group of friends, it's easier, and we get to walk around and browse at their tables too.  It was great fun chatting up with Roxanne St. Clair (who had wonderful news about a movie option!) and C.L. Lewis and her lovely daughter.

At the end of the day, the coordinator gave us a bag of books as a parting gift.  Yay, books ;-).  And I bought myself some CINNABONS, which is what malls are all about to me.  No Cinnabons? Ha, you ain't no mall.

Anyway, many of the books in the bag are new-to-me authors.  I'm picking a couple for myself and then would like to share the bag with two of my blog readers.

BIG BAD WOLF CH. 11

Taking care of a sick dog all weekend had finally taken its toll and early this evening, I konked out on my sofa till a couple of hours ago. Sigh. You know what that means. This coming day is going to be a torture to get through because I'd be wanting to nap all day.

There were several things I wanted to boast about yesterday. Miracle ate! Ranger Buddy clapped a few beats and threw some music terms at me! An astrologer I talked to told me my coming "new" year was going to be better than this past one! Miracle ate again!

But I fell asleep instead. There were a lot of ups and downs this past few days. If you don't believe the mental fatigue, just check out the zits that appeared on my face. Disgusting. How can that be happening when I am ONE year older?

So, here's Big Bad Wolf Ch. 11 (link no longer works). I didn't spend as much time rewriting/editing it as I'd like and there might be a few typos because again, exhausted. Sorry to the typo-gnashers in the reading crowd. I promise to go over it when my brain's less taxed.

Thank you so much for your prayers. Miracle is doing better. Lots of new heart medication and me playing fierce momma, checking on her as much as I can. It's still a serious condition but like all heart disease, we will follow a regimen so as not to be overstrain that organ. The vet said the next week will be crucial.

You don't know how happy her old sister was to see her. I've never seen that little girl kissed her sibling that much. We all thank you again for all your good healing thoughts.

Let's see, quick impression: Beijing gave a brilliant overview of 5000 years of history, showing off the Chinese culture with the impressive beating of the drums, the special effects, the gazillion-dollar fireworks, wowed everyone with tens of thousands of performers that would shame the Ziedfeld Ladies with their giant unfurling flowers and symbols, finishing off with the symbolic tower of flame and glowing shiny people, and then London accepted the challenge of the next Olympics with...

YAY! HOUSE IS BACK TODAY.

I've missed him so. Cranky. Rude. Incredibly Insolent. Meets really weird sick people. Perfect!

Of course, my Orlando Magic is also playing the crucial game 5 of the first round of the playoffs. I nearly went to see it live but it started drizzling and I didn't feel like fighting the snarl of downtown Orlando traffic in the rain. I used to go to the playoffs a lot, during the Shaq area. I miss the roar, the crowd excitement, the adrenalin of watching a power struggle.

But House is also all about power struggle too, yes? Everyone wants to win.

Well, I have something today for you to win ;-). I have two books from RT which look so good.

Sylvia Day gave me two copies of each, and I'm keeping a set for myself. I love the covers, don't you? Want a shot at owning these two books?

Post #2: Challenge and Free Book

Dear Author has a thread saying that romance books don't look deeply enough at issues, that is, if, let's say, the hero is a soldier with PTSD, the PTSD issue is discarded pretty quickly once the lust sets in. Or, the issue is just window-dressing for the romance.

I (also in my reply) stated that it's a delicate balance when it comes to writing our genre. There's the sunshine-y aspect of a happy ending and our readers don't really want all the gory details of, let's say, war. I think my books do deal with heavy subjects with enough detail, yet the focus is also on a love relationship between the protagonists during dangerous times. I don't skirt around the fact that my spies and good guys wear gray hats now and then (Jed/Stefan) and that even the bad guys have a sense of humor (Dilaver).

John Scalzi has again generously open a thread for his readers to pimp (in a good way) and I thought I'd invite his readers to read one of my SEAL books, THE HUNTER, for free. Because I think I write for any reader who's interested in different cultures and issues, that's why. And because I think it's always good to show to others that it's not just "oooh, romance" going on in our genre's books.

If you're coming from Scalzi's blog (thanks again, John), please leave a comment and tomorrow sometime, I'll pick a couple of names from the hat. You'll have to come back here to check, though. For my other readers :::smile::: you get to read a bit about Jed on Post #1. And hey, please feel free to get your non-romance reading friend to post here for a free book too. The more pimpage the better!
