Review: A SONG FOR MY MOTHER by Kat Martin

Genre: Women's Fiction
Hardcover
Vanguard Press (Ap 5, 2011)

I received this ARC for review and will be giving it away to one lucky commenter who answers a question.  The contest ends next Monday.

****************

A Song For My Mother is a reunion story between a daughter and her mother.  It's quite short--the author called it a novella in her interview at the end of the book--and I read it in one sitting.

Marly Hanson has been estranged from her mother, Winnie, for years since Marly ran away with her boyfriend during Junior High.  Marly has never forgiven her mother for never choosing to walk away from her abusive father, but because of her daughter's recent bout with brain cancer, she is compelled to visit her old hometown so her daughter could meet her grandmother.

Complicating matters, Marly becomes attracted to Winnie's next door neighbor, a handsome sheriff named Reed.  She isn't planning to stay and certainly doesn't intend to have a serious relationship.

Besides the mother-daughter conflict, there is also romance and friendship. Reed is the likeable and solid hero.  His son (he's a widower) makes a good friend for Marly's daughter.  Also, there's a small sub-plot that the author used to show how a decision made by any parent could be a mistake with grave consequences, highlighting Marly's and Winnie's past decisions.

A Song For My Mother is about Marly's journey back home.  It's a tale of understanding, forgiveness, and ultimately, love. The story is simple, with few surprises, but it's a charming and enjoyable read. I think it's a perfect Mother's Day gift.

Quick Update

VIRTUALLY HERS is coming out in a month!

I'm sending out the e-ARCs one by one, slowly, because my puter can't handle many big files going out or coming in. This is a warning to some of you who are getting it in their email. Believe me, I know* how frustrating it is to have someone who thinks sending ten photos in their original size into your mailbox at once without any warning is okay. Not fun, if you're one of those people who use OE or Thunderbird. And not very nice, if you have a medium-sized web account which can't handle huge files.

So, if you have changed your mind about getting the e-ARC file, please let me know.

So what GENERAL questions would you like me to answer about Virtually Hers? Hee.

Question

In a match between Alex and Jed--yes, you heard right, Number One and Number Nine in a fight--who would win? Who would get the most hits?

;-)

Consider this while I...uh...go back to figuring out my WORD DOC problems to create a nice ARC for y'all.

And oh, today I received in the mail Patricia Briggs' Hunting Ground. I can't wait to start it! If you have not tried her Alpha and Omega werewolf series, I highly recommend it. What are you reading now?

It's Not Chocolate

It's that day! Better gargle...breath mints...take a shower!

YOOHOO, I bet you didn't get this for Valentine's day!

My publicist sent me two so that I can have two contests--one for my wonderful blog readers who've stuck with me for EIGHTEEN MONTHS reading my posts about the book. The other is for my newsletter and YAHOOgroup readers.

They are in large print, look like trade paperbacks but the real thing on the shelves this May is regular paperback size.

STREET DATE: End of April, 2007.

Now I have to think of rules, time of, and questions for the contests. Do you think one month is TOO LONG for an ARC contest?

How much chocolate and bribes are these babies worth, huh, huh? ;-)
