For those who emailed me the last few days, concerned about my safety in the Florida fires, thank you for your prayers and kind thoughts. I'm safe, not to worry. Although the fire is a concern, it's still about 20 miles away by the highway. It's surreal, I know, to blog and talk about smoke and acrid smells and homes burning down when it's happening half an hour away from where you live.
It's the strange world of Internet Connectivity. Even back in the late 90s, when the dry season fires re-emerged, I was busy updating my situation on the now extinct Prodigy forum boards. Those were ancient days!
Anyway, depending on the direction of the wind, some mornings bring the smell of smoke and fire. There are woods nearby my house, so I'd usually take a quick looksee to check whether it is coming from anywhere nearby. The fires, from what I've seen on the news, jumped I-95 and did quite a bit of damage, but are otherwise mostly contained. I'm hoping they would stay that way. It's been really, really dry down here--hasn't rained in months--but the rainy season usually doesn't start till the heat of summer is upon us. What is worrisome is the unusually high winds.
A few years back, when it seemed like the whole of Florida was burning up, we couldn't even drive to some of the subdivisions where we were working because ashes and sparks were literally landing on the roofs around. That was interesting...nailing a shingle on and watching its edges curl up like shrivelled leaves.
If there are Florida readers visiting my blog, I hope you're okay where you are. And if you have family or friends who are firefighters, may God keep them safe out there in the fires. And thanks again, dear readers, for always thinking about me being all alone with my mutant furbabies ;-). I admit, having so many furbabies make it tough to find shelter during any evacuation orders. We're so fortunate to have good friends like you.

I'm in Palm Bay, and I can tell you the last few days have been a horror. Friends/co-workers scrambling to find out if they have a home to go to, and the power out in 1/2 the town. And all of this started by some idiot with a "fire-fettish". ( PB police think they've caught him btw!)
I don't think any of us down here will be safe until we get some much-needed rain. And that looks to be days/weeks away.
And I'm with you- Bless our firefighters- they are truly heros!
Here is WV it's not fire season yet, but late summer will see half the state burning all because some fire bug wanted to cause havock.
Most of the firefighters here are volunteers, sadly, many times they are the ones that start the fires.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all in FL <><
Here in northern Minnesota it's been wet, not dry like last year with all the fire danger and the huge Ham Lake fire.
Jenn, glad and yours are safe. For the others in Florida, hope you and yours are also safe. I was born in West Palm Beach, snd still have a couple of family members in the area.
I'll second the thoughts and prayers.
Thanks, everyone. I'm sending prayers to you, KC.
