Remember when we strolled down memory lane a couple of weeks back, reminiscing about the different covers?
Doing a quick poll. I stole these covers from the Smart Bitches. These are the original covers of our beloved romance Keepers from the early days. Check out the clinches ;-). Beside each are the modern reissues of the same book, oh, a couple of decades later.
The poll is: Which one would you buy if, let's say, these books are out there today at your fave brick and mortar bookstore? Which one would catch your attention?
This second "rogue" is so gentle I think I'm going to do a reread of Moby Dick to get some macho violence....
See the BIG difference? ;-) What's your initial reaction?
Clinch cover or weird pastel art that conveys nothing about the stories inside?
Whoa, here! Wild couple or wild horsie? Heh.
This last new reissued cover cracked me up. Where is the savageness of that house on the hill scene?!
So, my questions are:
1) which ones of these covers are in your Keeper Shelf?
2) Which covers do you lurv--the old school ones or the newly ho-humed ones? I know, I know, my bias is showing.
3) Do you feel better now that your romance reading is hiding behind such safe looking covers? Garnered a bit more respect? :big evil grin:
Bear with me while I learn. The first button likes the POST. The second button likes the BLOG site. Please help me by "liking" me. Thanks!

Johanna Lindsey's covers crack.me.up. I've come to expect the total cliche covers (and actually like them) from her and have to say that I'm disappointed at the reissued covers.
The Kathleen Woodiwiss reissue is soooo lame. Not only did women NOT sit like that, but she's on a snow covered bench in the middle of winter. Her skin should be blue. And those shoes? Pul-lease.
So even if I roll my eyes and giggle a little at the original covers, the reissued ones are worse.
I wouldn't buy gentle rogue in the new cover even though I know and love the story. I want my romance to look like romance and if it looks like a scene from the British impressionment era then I think I'll just have to go check out ellorascave thank you very much.
I gotta disagree with Casee on the first cover. The contrast between the white and red (not the image itself) is very eye-catching. The dreamy quality and lack of real contrast in the original would never actually catch my eye, then or now. The later covers for Lindsey are pathetic but the clinch covers make me laugh. So I got a kick out of them as a kid, but now, ugh! Though speaking of Lindsey, does anyone remember a book by her where the heroine's name was Wynter and the hero was a pirate captain? For the life of me I cannot remember it and I'd love to see if I can still find a copy. The only other Lindsey I really liked was the one with the Russian guy (yeah - I'm sooo good with names LOL) where his mother has her whipped. LOL (at me) and did she ever do Vasya's story later? Is this post long enough?!
I prefer the original Woodiwiss cover. The two pictures make me think he is going to take her back to that beautiful mansion, gentle disrobe and tear into her like tomorrow's ending. The re-issue seems cold to me. While, I love the "fire" colored dress, I find the picture boring.
The Gentle Rogue re-issue (especially with all the men on the cover) makes me think it's a sweet gay romance with gentle pirates.

Ugh! Those 'new' covers are awful. Mind you, I haven't read any of those books but if I decided to and had a choice of the 2 covers, I'd buy the original. Of course, I'd probably only read them in the privacy of my home.
Hey, I like the non-Fabio covers. It makes life a WHOLE lot easier when reading while commuting. As if the crazies in NYC don't have enough to harass me about.
I also like the cartoony chick-lit covers. I like cartoons. =P
Casee,
The prim and properness of it all made me giggle.
Deborah,
LMAO on the gay gentle pirates. It's just amazing how different the two covers are, aren't they? I keep wondering whether I'm reading romance or something about English Scenic Art.
Elaine,
See, I'm a clinch cover fan ;-). Sometimes they are so fugglylicious I enjoy the story even more, LOL.
SQ,
Coward ;-D. Just kidding. I know many people are comfy carrying those covers around. See, I don't care, LOL. I like showing off my "bad taste" in reading to the world.
