I have been so busy, inundated by life, that I haven't had time to go through my loot and read. What are you guys reading out there? Any great finds?
I was talking to a friend about how historicals are taking more risks these days. Have you noticed? There are still Regency Rakes, but you also get the Victorian Buffy in the Gardella Vampire Chronicles by Colleen Gleason. There's Valdez and Campbell, two authors who wrote "controversial" historicals that got a lot of buzz. Gaelen Foley is doing historicals set in India. I include Shana Abe's dragon-historicals. Elizabeth Hoyt. Pamela Clare's historicals. Anyone else you want to add to this list?
It's good to see that! I'm tired of Regency Balls, almost as tired of new vampire series.
Of course, I'm never sick of the Original Sexy Angsty Sexy Vampire/Slayer evah, a vampire named Angel.
I love that vampire's story so, sigh. And the episode in which he could walk in sunshine again? And found that he hungered for food? And then learned that the price was the loss of his strength, thus his mission? And the sacrifice he decided to make? Best. Episode. Evah. Sniff.
Angel started my love affair with angsty vampires. Of course, David Boreanez definitely helped ;-).
Who was your first vampire?

Angel was my first vampire, too. *sigh* We're watching the 1st season of Bones right now he's really good in the show even though he'll always be Angel to me.
I'm reading a Colleen Thompson book. Just finished the new Roberts (which took me 3 days to read). I haven't read historicals for a long time. The last I read them was when I devoured Celeste Bradley's series. Luuuuurve her. I also luuuuurve Pamela Clare's historicals. Can't wait for Morgan's book.
I really like Hoyt, she was a new one for me this year, am still waiting for the new Lisa Valdez, loved her 1st and cannot wait till the finally publish her 2nd. Have been getting back into a few historicals lately, bit of Susan Johnson. Oldies but goodies!
I think my 1st Vamp was this one in this 80's movie called Fright Night. I always wished the vamp survived!! He was played by Chris Sarandon and back in the day he was a real *hunk of spunk*. Te he he. Then there was Angel and Spike... I am an addict!
First Vampire will truly date me.
Dark Shadows Barnabas Collins
Rhonda
My first vampire was Frank Langella as Dracula. My brother-in-law kidding me for weeks after at the way my eyes dialated when I saw him. I love Spike and Angel too, but the vampire I would really offer my neck to is the one Antonio Banderas played in Interview With a Vampire. Forget Tom Cruise, Antonio rules! As for reading, I've just discovered the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Oh, mama!
Angel RUINED Buffy. Pre-Angel luving, Buffy was this kick a$$ slayer. Seasons 1-3 were killer. I laughed. I cried. I wanted to BE Buffy.
Post Angel, Buffy was this mopey, broody, angsty slayer. Without her dry wit. She lost her spark. It was like watching Dawson's Creek w/o the Pacey/Joey/Dawson triangle.
Casee,
What did you think of the new Nora?
Bones was awful the first season but the second/third? season has been great.
Rhonda,
Well, my first vampire was Bela Lugosi but that wasn't what I meant ;-). I meant the first one that got me to see the vampire as a sexy hero. Dark Shadows was interesting (and gothic) but I never did feel a thing for Barnabus.
Sarah,
There's nothing like a Susan Johnson historical befores she started contemps. Nothing. Sigh.
SQ,
No, sweetie, got to disagree. Angel made it possible for Buffy to grow up, to see the bigger picture. It is SPIKE that made Buffy broody and mopey. Angel taught Buffy to be heroic. Spike taught Buffy to be dark and anti-heroic.
Don't get me wrong. I love Spike. He was as angsty and a tasty character to love. But Buffy will always belong to Angel and vice-versa. They made a silent pact, something Joss Whedon never allowed as their creator. To me, Angel leaves to give Buffy time to grow up. Buffy dies and Joss doesn't even let us see the poor guy grieve? He lets him go to be with Buddhist monks in the OFF SEASON? Joss, dude. That's cold to us fans.
As you can see. I am an extreme fan. And still can rant about a show that's been off the air all these years already.
