When Words Mean Nothing

And we romance readers understand the power of words in our books! The POV of, as well as, communication between, the hero and heroine must:

1) Be riveting and layered with emotion

2) Show their attraction and emotional growth

3) Reveal their undercurrents

4) Make the plot twists interesting and believable.

NONE OF WHICH IS HAPPENING IN THE 2007 TAX CODE BOOK I'M READING!!!! I'm not riveted. It's a million-worded piece of tree-killer. The only kind of growth reminds me of a tumor that FEEDS ON MY MONEY AND BRAIN CELLS. There is no undercurrents; I'm drowning in red tape and examples. And there is no plot or happy ending in this story for me the heroine. The only suspense left is whether I'll still be alive when I'm through with this book!

I need to get me this teeshirt. God. Who are the writers of these codes? And which sub-circle of hell should I put them into? How can one sentence be so complicated that every term has to be looked into for further explanation? Why does it take me half an hour to read one paragraph? And another half to half-way understand it?

Gah.

Carry on among yourselves. I moan and bitch about this every year. This is the time when I feel like Hagar The Horrible when the king's taxmen come. Every year, they find another way to astound and stun with their clever use of language. It'd be entertaining if the end result didn't empty my bank account and make me cry.

The skit below is what's happening all over the States right now and tonight.

You do know you have until April 17 to file your taxes this year don't ya?

It's just to prolong the agony! :D

My best friend, who's American, has the same headache when it's IRS time. Does the average American feel that way, too?

It's very different here in Singapore. (Our deadline was April 11) I just go online and it's already filled out, including any write-offs I'm entitled to. I only have to fill in anything extra that the govt didn't know about so each year I just key in whatever amount my brother sends to me and click 'submit'. Voila! A couple of months later, I get a letter from the tax dept informing me that a refund has been paid into my bank account. Why? Coz the amount I entered already has corporate tax paid and since I am filing my personal tax, which is lower, I get refunded the balance. It's not much - just a few hundred bucks - but it's just a thrill getting money from the tax people every year instead.

Apart from the unbeatable culinary variety, that's the other reason why I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world.

Steff!
Yes, Braves is in first!!!! Yippeeeee.

I know the extra day for taxes this year (Emancipation Day on the 16th...hahahaha...are they funny or what) but remember, I have to do my own businesses taxes too!

Hi Elaine,
Since I do my own business taxes, it's more complicated than fill in what you make a year. Personal taxes are not too bad if you're not self-exployed since your employer pays and deducts your Social Security and other government stuff. Self-employed people have to do the figuring themselves. Also, the idea that you get a refund and being happy over HERE is an illusion because that means your government has been keeping YOUR money INTEREST free for a whole year before "refunding" it back to you. It means your employer has overpaid. Very smart choice of word, huh. As a self-employed person since forever, I know exactly how much money the government takes from me. Too. Damn. Much. And no, I make sure I never get a "refund." I'm not giving them anything more than I have to a year! ;-P

I've forgotten the percentage rate Malaysians and Singaporeans pay for taxes, but I'm assuming, like Europe, it's probably higher than here. I could be wrong, since I haven't checked SEA government sectors in a long time.
