Uber Roofer's Potluck

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Are you wearing green?

One year, someone I know, whom I shall not humiliate by making his name public, painted his weenie green for St. Patrick's Day. I guess he thought that was his lucky Shamrock.

If I had known about the excerpt from yesterday, I would have called it the Green Creature.

Back in college, we used to drink green beer at O'Hooleys. That was our favorite Irish pub and they had Irish bands that came in and sang Irish songs about being drunk. I remember I won an album (yes, it was way back when they still made RECORDS, not CDs) from this group for going up on stage and singing along with them and making up the lyrics because I had no idea what they were. I remember the whole bar, along with the band members, were all laughing, hooting and hollering at my wonderful creativeness. Yes, a barful of men on their knees in front of me. Either I was really great, or they were all drunk. ;-)

Ranger Buddy, as you know, is Irish. He's the only Irish dude who doesn't like corned beef and cabbage, which our favorite eatery, Shit and Grits, will be serving today. The guy's Irish accent sounds exactly like his German and Russian accents. But I'm very happy to report that his Spanish accent does sound somewhat Spanish (he's really doing well with his lessons, by the way. If you remember, he gave up TV this year and had decided to study Spanish so we could yell intelligently at the crapenters).

Ranger Buddy did visit Ireland a few years back. It was a family trip. This was his first trip out of the country since his Ranger Days. I was very surprised he actually took the days off, since as I've told you before, our company only has basically two holidays a year ;-). But he went there, looked at the roofs, bought a pair of shoes, and came home. Of course he didn't have any photos to show me. Are you kidding? You're talking to a man who took pictures of the inside of his nose with a cheap camera when he was trying to take a picture of me. He missed the Cave Men era by, oh a few millennia, I think.

Anyway, I have a fondness for all things Irish since my college days. I don't know why, but I get along with rowdy Irish men very well. I once did make a Scots mad when I told him he sounded Irish. Ooops.

If you ever feel like reading a great book of Irish history and tragedy, pick up Leon Uris' Trinity. It is one of the best books I've ever read. It does have a bit of a unrequited romance in it and it sings with passion.

Even Ranger Buddy read it at my recommendation, and he enjoyed it very much. It was, at that time, the first long book he'd read in decades. Mission accomplished ;-). However, do not even think about picking up the sequel, Redemption, written a lot later. It sucks. Trust me.

I shall be wearing a green shirt that says "This is my lucky shirt." I need all the luck I can get these days. Here's wishing you your pot of gold and may you have some green weenies to laugh at, lassies!

What program is Ranger Buddy using to learn Spanish? I want to learn how to speak it, too, so I can deal more effectively with Spanish media requests. Every time I fly I look at ads for Rosetta Stone disks.

How old is old, by the way?

Mary Stella, I'm not sure. It's nothing sophisticated, believe me--a book and some MP3 program. I'll try to find out for you. He's a senior citizen.

SQ, hmmm, I'll think about it ;-).
